Abstract

1,011,906. Screw conveying sugar cane for leaching. F. C. SCHAFFER, and R. W. McKENZIE. May 7, 1964, No. 19030/64. Heading B8A. Sugar cane is leached by water in tower 10, the fresh cane being fed into hopper 52 together with recycled solution received through pipe 51 and pumped at 54 so as to be introduced at 55 to the tower 10, the material being conveyed upwards through the tower by the screw conveyers 33. The solid matter is discharged at 42 by rotating blades 38, and the liquid is withdrawn at 44, of which that to be discharged is discharged at 46 and that to be recycled passes through pipe 48 and heater 50 to be re-used in hopper 52. Screw conveyers 33, Fig. 4.-Each conveyer 33 is formed of blades which are inclined as shown, the blades of the different screws being positioned at different levels so that material is passed from one screw to another screw as it proceeds upwards. The liquid falls through mesh 19 and is discharged at 44. The number of screws used may vary between two and seven.
