Abstract

1,007,529. Films. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 25, 1962 [Sept. 28, 1961], No. 36399/62. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions B2 and H1] An organic polymeric foil has grains of inorganic electrically non-conductive material evenly distributed therein, said grains having a heat conductivity which exceeds that of the foil material and having sizes which substantially equal the thickness of the foil. The foil material may be thermoplastic, or thermohardening, e.g. polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride and cellulose derivatives. Desirably the grains which may be for example, aluminium oxide or magnesium oxide are of substantially equal sizes, e.g. 20 microns. A mixture of powdered film material and electrically non-conductive grains may be compressed into a sheet and the sheet subjected to a thermal treatment to effect fusion so as to obtain a foil. Foil may be made in the same way in situ on the component to be insulated, the molten material adhering to the component on cooling. As shown in Fig. 1, grains from a vibrating hopper are rolled into a heated sheet. Alternatively, foil may be made by casting, the grains being added to the casting solution. Such foils are useful in electrical insulation, the embedded grains serving to conduct heat away from the insulated component.
