A depository machine includes means to validate, and means to record the image of a deposit tag prior to actuation of feed means on which a deposit is fed from an acceptance position to storage means, during which motion an image of the deposit is recorded. In one embodiment a deposit tag (Fig. 7) bearing a list of articles to be deposited, e.g. cheques &c., filled in on a portion 34, duplicated by carbon on the portion 32, and folded as shown, is pushed into the machine between guides 15, 16 until it contacts a switch which causes the transaction number, the date and the time to be recorded on the tag by pressing it against a carbon or inked ribbon over figure wheels. A microfilm camera is triggered to record an image of the portion 34 together with indicators showing the setting of the figure wheels. The camera simultaneously takes a photograph of a pair of sideby-side feed belts 71 which are stationary at this time. The tag is then removed and separated along the fold 33 and the portion 32 replaced in the machine. The portion 31 is placed in a hopper 12 and the cheques &c. to be deposited are placed on top followed by a weight 14, and coins and other bulky articles are placed in trapdoor 22 leading to a storage receptacle 22. A counting device may be provided to indicate the value of the coins. Depression of a feeler on a switch 81 by the presence of articles to be deposited causes a pair of feed wheels 89 to feed the articles one by one on to the pair of conveyer belts 71 and below a pressure roller 90. A switch situated between the conveyers is tripped each time an article passes and a photograph of the article while alongside the portion 32 of the deposit tag is taken. All articles of a single deposit placed in the hopper 12 are passed by the conveyers into a compartment 101 of a drum store 100 which is stepped one compartment each transaction. A further switch tripped by the articles steps an article counter. When the transaction has finished, i.e. when switch 81 has been released, the total number of articles deposited and the value of the coins are printed on the tag portion 32 which is returned and a further photograph showing these values is taken. In modifications two separate tags may be used and have tandem printing devices working one on each tag or a single tag equivalent to the portion 32 may be used. The setting of the print wheels may be displayed mechanically, electrically, optically or may comprise electronic display tubes.
