Abstract

1,000,864. Door closers. JACKSON EXIT DEVICE CORPORATION. Nov. 24, 1961, No. 42158/61. Heading E2M. In a door closer comprising a housing forming a reservoir for hydraulic fluid and containing a closing spring acting upon a check piston movable in a cylinder within the housing and linked with a spindle for connecting the closer to a door, a non-return valve is provided for permitting a free flow of fluid from the main portion of the reservoir into the cylinder during the opening movement of the door, and the closing movement is controlled by a pair of separate means one of which comprises a valve adjustable independently of the other means and arranged to permit a restricted flow during the whole of the closing movement and the other of which permits a restricted flow during an initial portion of the closing movement but is inoperative during the final portion of the movement. The first means is constructed so that the flow of fluid therethrough cannot be completely cut off. The drawings show a door closer adapted to be mounted in the lintel of a door frame and comprising a pair of closing springs 31 acting on pistons 20 movable in parallel cylinders 19 and linked by piston rods 40 to a pair of parallel plates 35, 36 provided with guide slots 37, 38. These slots receive corresponding shoulders 27, 28 formed on the spindle 24, and a cam 51 secured to the spindle moves in the space between the plates and co-operates with follower rollers 43, 44, 45 rotatable on shafts 48-50 mounted in the plates. Hold-open recesses 53 and hold-closed recesses 54 are formed in the cam surface. The cylinders 19 are connected by ports 80 to a bore 75 containing the first of the separate control means, which comprises a valve 70 screwed into the partition 18 between the cylinders to control the flow of fluid from the inner ends of the cylinders via a bore 79 to the main portion of the reservoir. A slight clearance between the valve stem 71 and the bore 75 prevents complete closure of the valve. The other control means comprises a tapered groove 65 in the wall of one of the cylinders which co-operates with the corresponding piston over the initial portion of the closing movement. In a modification the groove is replaced by a second valve similar to the valve 70 but spaced from the inner ends of the cylinders. A non-return valve 58 is provided in each of the pistons.
