Abstract
Powdered material, e.g. beryllium metal powder, is hot-pressed between upper and lower punches in a die which is at first supported from one of the punches and which is subsequently released to be movable relative to both punches when the friction between the powder and the die is sufficient to independently support the die. As shown in Fig. 1 a graphite die 1 is loosely supported, by a collar 7, on a liner 4 which is in turn supported upon the lower punch 2 by a partition 5. The powdered material 8 is placed in the liner and heated to the requisite temperature, after which pressure is <PICT:1000255/C6-C7/1> applied by the upper punch 3 thus compacting the material and expanding the liner tightly into contact with the die. Pressing is continued until friction between the powder and liner causes the liner to move downward thus shearing partition 5 from the liner, and releasing the die for movement relative to both punches during the subsequent pressing. In an alternative embodiment the die is initially supported, loosely around the liner, on the upper punch, by means of a collar (see Fig. 4 not shown), the liner being supported by the lower die and the partition being ruptured to release the die for relative movement as before during the subsequent pressing step. In a further embodiment the die is initially supported from either punch by mechanism which is manually releasable to facilitate relative movement during the subsequent pressing stage (see Figs. 2 and 3 not shown).
