Abstract

An internet terminal (10) with infrared control (14,16) and television screen (12) or alternatively a microcomputer with navigational software accesses an internet site (20) through an internet Service Provider (22) and a switched telephone network (18). Viewing modules in the terminal assign individual signatures to incoming blocks of data and these are checked against a stored terminal library. If a correspondence is found the corresponding viewing module decodes the data and displays it. If no correspondence is found connection is made to a maintenance server (24) having an up to date library and if a match with the signature is then found the corresponding viewing module is downloaded. The module is then used to update the terminal library and display the original block of data.
