Abstract

The device consists of a pocket or bag (2) with an extensible body, which has a closure valve (1) located at one extremity. The pocket may be inflated with a fluid introduced through the valve. The shape and volume of the pocket is selected to correspond to a particular human body joint. The pocket is formed of sterilisable non-irritant biocompatible material. The material is strong enough to allow pulling to remove it from the body after implantation adjacent to a joint. It may alternatively be formed of a material which may be absorbed into the body, avoiding the need for removal after implantation.
