Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a system for connecting a catheter to a medical tube. In the following description, the term “catheter” is intended to mean both catheters and probes, needles or any other equivalent means.
A catheter is generally fixed on the arm of a patient or on another part of his body to allow, for example, the diffusion of a medicinal product in the arteriovenous system,
Generally, a catheter is used to perform an infusion. The drug product to be infused is stored in a bottle and flows to the catheter by means of a hose, subsequently called the infusion hose.
To connect the catheter to the infusion tube, it is known to use a connector, for example, of the type which consists of two male frustoconical tips, one of which is intended to receive, by friction, the female tip of the catheter and the other, the infusion line.
Other types of catheter have a mile tip to which the infusion tube is connected directly.
As an infusion is generally an operation that takes place over an extended period of time, it can frequently occur, due to the pulling of the infusion hose and the fitting, that the supply of liquid is interrupted. perfusion due for example to the tearing of the infusion needle from the vein or to the separation of one of the ends of the connector. Such cases arise more particularly when the infusion is applied to agitated patients or animals.
The problem of maintaining the catheter on the skin is currently solved by means of catheters having transverse fins on their tip. Descriptions of such fin catheters can be found in patent documents EP-A-91 227 and WO-A-83 019.
With such catheters, said fins are sutured or fixed to the patient's skin, for example by means of adhesives, which has the effect of securing the catheter to the surface of the skin and thus avoiding tearing of the catheter and therefore a stop of the infusion.
However, such catheters are not entirely satisfactory as they do not prevent accidental separation of the infusion line from the catheter, or if a connector is interposed, from the connector.
An object of the invention is therefore to propose a system for connecting a catheter to an infusion pipe which makes it possible to avoid accidental separation between the catheter and the infusion pipe.
To this end, such a system consists of a connector one end of which is fixed said infusion tube, and the other end of which can be mounted said catheter, said connector being provided with means for fixing to the skin.
Such a system is advantageously used with a finned catheter, such as those mentioned above. The catheter fins, when sutured, secure the catheter to the skin of the patient as mentioned above. The fixing means of the connector allow the end of the infusion tube to be secured to the patient's skin, it being understood that said tube is fixed firmly on the connector.
Advantageously, said means consist of at least one fin or more fins fixed to the connector. These fins extend, for example, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the fitting.
In order to secure the connection to the patient's skin, the fins are provided with holes for passing sutures or an adhesive layer on their face normally resting on the skin of said patient.
In order to limit the sliding of the fitting on the skin or of the adhesive on the fitting, the fins can be provided with pins projecting on one side or on the other side of the fitting.
Elles peuvent également être recouvertes de rainures. They can also be covered with grooves.
The characteristics of the invention mentioned above, as well as others, will appear more clearly on reading the following description of an exemplary embodiment, said description being made in relation to the drawings, among which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a connector according to the invention ready to be equipped with a catheter and to be connected to an infusion tube, and
Figs. 2a to 2c are front views of several embodiments of a connector according to the invention.
In Fig. 1, a catheter 10, a connector 20 and one of the ends of an infusion tube 30 are shown.
The catheter 10 consists of a catheter needle 11 fitted, according to a technique known in the art, into a female end piece 12 on which is mounted a pair of fins 13.
The infusion tube 30 of which only one end 31 is seen at its other end, in normal use, which is connected to an infusion bottle (not shown). It is a flexible hose.
The connector 20 according to the invention consists of a central body 22 provided with two coaxial cylindrical parts 23 which are located on either side of the body 22. Said cylindrical parts 23 are respectively extended axially by two frustoconical ends 24 and 25 The cylindrical parts 23 are of diameters slightly greater than the diameters of the frustoconical parts 24 and 25 so as to form shoulders.
A channel 26 passes right through the connector 20 on the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical parts 23 and of the frustoconical ends 24.
The frustoconical part 24 is provided so that the infusion tube 30 can be firmly fixed. The tube 30 being flexible, this fixation is obtained by elastic clamping on the part 24 and by friction. It will be noted that the smallest diameter of the part 24 must be greater than the internal diameter of the pipe 30 to obtain the elastic tightening.
As for the frustoconical part 25, it is designed to fit on the female end piece 13 which is provided with a frustoconical hole (not shown). The dimensions of the part 25 are substantially equal to those of the hole of the female end piece 13.
According to the invention, the connector 20 is provided with means for fixing to the skin. Said fixing means consist of two fins 27 and 28, substantially planar, which are integral with the body of the connector 22. The fins 27 and 28 lie substantially in the same plane and extend perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the channel 26 , or longitudinal axis of the connector 20. The plane which contains the fins 27 and 28 is located under the axis of the channel 26 so that the connector 20, seen from the front, has the shape of an "omega"
It will be noted that, without departing from the scope of the present invention, it is possible to provide the connection 20 with a single fin such as the fins 27 and 28.
on notera également que la ou les ailettes 27 et 28 peuvent Btre rapportées, par tout moyen connu, sur le raccord 20. it will also be noted that the fin or fins 27 and 28 can be added, by any known means, to the connector 20.
According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the fins 27 and 28 are provided with one or more holes 27a, 28a which allow the passage of the sutures on the skin of the patient and thus the attachment of the fins.
In order to limit the sliding of the connector 20 on the skin, in particular during the suturing of the fine fins 27 and 28, these may be provided with means projecting from the lower faces 27b and 28b. Such means are for example spikes, protrusions created by grooves, etc. There is shown in FIG. 2b, such pins 42.
According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 2a, the fins 27 and 28 comprise, on their lower faces 27b and 28b normally intended to be in contact with the skin, an adhesive layer 10 provided to allow the attachment of the fins 27 and 28 to the patient's skin.
To fix the fins 27 and 28 on the patient's skin, it is also possible to use adhesive tape by sticking it to the skin and making it cover at least part of the fins 27 and 28. This method of use can be considered with fins 27 and 28 which are not provided with holes for passage of the suture 27a and 28a, or with adhesive layers on their surface in contact with the skin. In this case, to limit the sliding of the adhesive tape on the patient's skin, it is desirable to provide either means projecting from the upper face of the fins 27, 28, such as pins or protuberances formed by grooves. Such pins 43 have been shown in FIG. 2c.
It will be noted that the shape or the material of the fins 27 and 28 is indifferent since they allow the attachment of the fitting 20 to the patient's skin.
Once the catheter needle 11 is inserted into the vein and the catheter 10 is held in place on the patient's skin by means of its fins 13, the fitting 20 is connected to the catheter 10 by introducing the frustoconical part 25 into the corresponding hole of the catheter 10. The locking of the connector 20 on the catheter 10 is obtained by the wedging of the frustoconical part 25 in the corresponding hole of the catheter 10, jamming due to the frustoconical shape.
It will be noted that at this moment, the perfusion pipe 30 is fixed in the frustoconical part 24.
Once the fins 27 and 28 of the connector 20 are sutured or fixed with adhesives on the patient's skin, the connection between the catheter 10 and the connector 20 is protected against accidental detachment. In fact, if a tensile force is exerted on the connector 20, for example via the pipe 30, the fins 27 and 28 absorb the traction and thus prevent its propagation at the junction between the connector 20 and the catheter 10.
The presence of the fins 27 and 28 also makes it possible to completely immobilize the catheter needle 11 in a vein. This is particularly advantageous in the case of infusions on animals. Indeed, the animals under perfusion being mobile in a cage, they exert strong pulls on the perfusion device.
Their movements can cause lateral movements of the catheter 10 around its point of attachment to the skin and consequently a lesion of the vein following the movements of the catheter 11 inside the latter. The lateral displacement of the catheter needle 11 in the vein is made negligible by the presence of the fins 21 of the connector 20 according to the invention.
