Abstract

The implant valve comprises, housed inside a rigid tube 21, a flexible tube 26 opening at one end 32 into the anterior chamber of the eye and at its opposite end 27 into the conjunctiva, the said flexible tube being capable of contracting in transverse cross-section by a remote control.

Description

Valve-implant pour soigner le glaucome;
Valve-implant to treat glaucoma;
The subject of the invention is a valve-implant for treating glaucoma.

It has already been proposed to treat glaucoma using a device or valve-implant constituted by a flexible tube with two branches forming an obtuse angle between them, one of the branches being intended to be introduced into the anterior chamber of the eye and being closed at its end subject to slots which can open under the effect of an overpressure in the chamber, the other branch opening into the conjunctiva.

Such a valve-implant has a certain number of drawbacks, well known to specialists, and which arise from accidental obtention, partial or total, of the slits and of the difficulties of evacuation of the liquid.

The implant valve according to the invention is characterized in that, comprising a flexible tube, the latter is open at its two ends, including that placed in the inner chamber of the eye, said flexible tube being housed in a rigid tube, with two branches forming an obtuse angle between them, with respect to which the end of the flexible tube in the anterior chamber protrudes, the operation of the valve-implant being caused by the contraction of the flexible tube in a part where it is surrounded by the rigid tube.

According to one embodiment, the contraction of the flexible tube is obtained by the mechanical action exerted on the wall of the flexible tube of the mini-magnets subjected to the action of an external magnetic field. Advantageously, the mini-magnets are embedded in the thickness of the wall of the flexible tube.

With such a valve-implant, incidents associated with the use of the known valve-implant are avoided.

In the description which follows, given by way of example, reference is made to the appended drawings #, in which FIG. 1 is a schematic view in elevation; Figure 2 is a schematic view in longitudinal section; Figure 3 is a sectional view along line III-III of Figure 2; Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the wall of the flexible tube; Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4, but for another condition; Figure 6 is a very schematic view of an eyeball with the valve-implant; Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 2, but for another condition.

The implant valve according to the invention comprises a rigid outer tube 21, for example made of polymethylmethacrylate, having a branch 22 and a branch 23, substantially rectilinear, extending from one another, the mean lines of which form an angle between them o # close to 1ode. C rigid 21 has tabs 24 and 25 to secure it in the eye, in principle without stitches.

Inside the rigid tube 21 is housed a flexible tube 26, for example made of silicone, the end 27 of which, opposite to that intended to be placed in the anterior chamber of the eye, is assembled by a fold 29 to the opposite end 28 of the rigid tube 21. At its opposite end, the tube 26 is extended, beyond an annular partition 31 closing the rigid tube 21, along an open end 32, the length of which may moreover be adjusted, by sectioning, during the surgical operation for the placement of the implant. The passage through the tube 26 of the annular partition 31 terminating the rigid tube 21 is sealed.

In the thickness of the wall 33 constituting the tube 26, grains 36 are present, made of magnetic material, coated in a flexible film 37, for example made of polytetrafluoroethylene (teflon). Notches 45 on the wall 33 facilitate the deformation thereof when bending.

At rest, the condition is that shown in Figure 2.

(figure 6) du globe oculaire et la conjonctive 46.
The part 34 of the tube 26 housing the grains 36 is in contact or almost in contact with the opposite part 38 of the rigid tube 21. The flexible tube 26 provides free communication at constant cross section between the anterior chamber 9
(figure 6) of the eyeball and the conjunctiva 46.

By bringing a strong magnet to the valve-implant and moving it in a suitable movement, the grains 36, 37 stress the part 34 of the wall of the flexible tube 26 housing the grains to bring it closer to the opposite part 39 of said flexible wall. Part 39 can rest on the adjacent part of the rigid tube. The liquid (austere humor) contained in the interval 41 between said parts is urged upon expulsion and, in the case W xzes, flows outward through the orifice 42 of the tube 26.

By moving the magnet away, the flexible tube 26 resumes its initial conformation due to the elasticity of the wall which constitutes it.

The action is repeated if and when it is needed.

The valve-implant according to the invention thus makes it possible to maintain the pressure prevailing inside the anterior chamber of the eye at the appropriate value under optimal conditions of efficiency and safety.

Its introduction into the eye can be carried out easily.

Elle y est bien supportée. It is well supported there.
