Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to biopsy forceps.
Biopsy forceps are commonly used in the medical or veterinary fields to remove tissue fragments requiring histological examination. Now, when samples must be taken from more or less deep cavities in the subject's body, the practitioner can only very rarely carry out a direct and permanent visual control of his intervention.
The present invention proposes to remedy this shortcoming and, to do this, it relates to a biopsy forceps which is characterized in that it comprises two concentric tubes displaceable axially with respect to each other, at least two complementary jaws protruding at one end of the outer tube and each articulated on the two tubes; and means for axially displacing one of the two tubes and rotating the jaws between a closed position in which they are applied against each other and an open position in which they are spaced apart from one the other.
Thanks to its tubular structure, this biopsy forceps can be threaded onto the external body of an endoscope for medical or veterinary use. Thus, the choice of the fragment of tissue to be removed, the execution of the sample and the extraction thereof can take place under permanent visual control, which facilitates the task of the practitioner and allows a very precise and sure execution of the 'intervention.
Preferably, the jaws join on the axis of the two tubes when they are in their closed position and extend parallel to these when they are in their open position. In this latter position, it is advantageous for them to be an extension of the inner tube. Indeed, the body of the endoscope can thus pass freely between the jaws, which makes it possible to carry out a visual examination while keeping the clamp threaded on the endoscope. Furthermore, it is possible to appreciably reduce the clearances between the clamp and the endoscope and therefore to avoid false movements during observation and sampling.
An embodiment of the present invention will be described below by way of nonlimiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
- - Figure 1 is a side view of a biopsy forceps according to the invention
- Figure 2 is an enlarged view from above and with cutaway of the anterior end of the clamp visible in Figure 1
- Figure 3 is a partial view in axial section and on an enlarged scale of the clamp visible in Figure 1, the jaws being in their closed position; and
- Figure 4 is a sectional view of the end of the tubes which is adjacent to the jaws, these being in their open position.
The biopsy forceps which is shown in the drawings comprises two concentric tubes 1,2 which can be moved axially relative to each other, two complementary jaws 3, 4 projecting from the anterior end of the external tube 1, and means 5 for axially moving one of the two tubes and controlling the jaws, these means being adjacent to the rear end of the outer tube.
The two tubes have a circular section and are open at their two ends. As for the jaws, they are slightly curved outwards. They end with complementary teeth 6 and are each articulated on the two tubes, around two perpendicular axes.
Their articulation on the outer tube 1 is constituted by two diametrically opposite holes 7 made in the wall of said outer tube, as well as by two pins 8 each carried by a jaw and mounted each pivoting in a bore 7.
Their articulation on the outer tube 2 is, for its part, constituted by two diametrically opposite pivots 9, each of these pivots connecting the two jaws with the end of a lateral protuberance 10 extending the inner tube 2.
In the embodiment shown, the inner tube 2 carries two sleeves 11 and 12 spaced from each other on the outer face of its wall, sleeves by means of which it rests on the wall of the outer tube 1 .
The sleeve 11 advances beyond the anterior end of the inner tube 2 and carries the protrusions 10 mentioned above. The sleeve 12 covers the rear end of the inner tube 2.
It will be noted here that the sleeves 11 and 12 make it possible to limit the intensity of the friction forces generated between the two tubes during the sliding of one relative to the other.
Referring in particular to FIG. 1, it will further be noted that the displacement means 5 are constituted by two gripping arms 13 and 14 articulated one on the other about an axis 15. The arm 13 is fixed, for example by welding, to the wall of the outer tube 1. The arm 14 carries a stirrup 16 by means of which it is articulated on the rear end of the inner tube 2. To allow this articulation, the arms of the stirrup 16 are each pierced with an oblong slot 17 in which protrudes a lug 18 provided on a socket 19 fixed on the sleeve 12, this socket being located at a certain distance from the rear end of the tube interior 1 when the jaws are open.
To be complete, it will be noted that the free ends of the gripping arms each end in a ring 20, the dimensions of which are determined to give passage either to the thumb or to the index finger of the practitioner.
When using the biopsy forceps according to the invention, the pivoting of the gripping arm 14 about the axis 15 allows the jaws to pivot between their closed position (visible in FIG. 3) in which they are join on the axis of the two tubes and their open position (visible in Figure 4) in which they are in line with the inner tube.
Suppose the jaws are closed, their opening is obtained by rotating the gripping arm 14 in the direction of arrow F1.
During this movement, the stirrup 16 acts on the lugs 18 and forces the tube 2 to slide in the direction of the arrow F2 inside the tube 1. The pivots 9 then approach the free end of the tube 1, which forces the pins 8 to pivot in the direction of arrow F3 inside the holes 7 and consequently the jaws to open.
Note that the sleeve 19 abuts against the outer tube 1 when the opening of the jaws is maximum. It is easily understood that the closing of the jaws is obtained by rotating the gripping arm 14 in the opposite direction in order to return the inner tube to its starting position.
The biopsy forceps according to the invention, by virtue of its tubular structure, can advantageously be used in combination with an endoscope when it is necessary to take a visual sample from a body cavity of a patient. To take this sample, the jaws are opened, the clamp is threaded onto the body of the endoscope so that the front part of it, shown in phantom in Figures 3 3 and 4, advances to -from open jaws (see Figure 4), we introduce the assembly formed by the front part of the body of the endoscope and the front part of the forceps in the cavity containing the tissue to be sampled, we select visually the part to remove, the endoscope is moved back so that it is slightly behind the jaws (see Figure 3), and these are gradually closed to carry out, still under visual control, the selected sample.
