Abstract

A non-contact device for detecting the orientation and/or dimensions of an object moving between an optical transmitter and receiver enables workpieces on an assembly line (17) to be compared with the stored contour of a reference article. It is a rapidly operating device capable of checking complicated shapes and can be adapted to different shaps, without changing the evaluations circuit or programme. The light beam, typically from an LED (10) produces values which are through a reference piece are stored and compared with these values measured when a piece to be evaluated lies in the beam path. A warning signal generated when an error of a defined size is exceeded causes the piece to be repositioned ore rejected.
