Abstract

Device for closing, at least temporarily, human or animal body ducts, tubes or cavities by introduction into the duct etc., consists of a material (A) which swells by >=20 (best >=80)% in contact with the body fluids but is inert towards these fluids and surrounding tissues. (A) is pref. a hydrogel of the acrylic type, esp. a methacrylic ester copolymer with >=1 OH in the side chain and polyfunctional methacrylate residues, esp. derived from a methacrylate ester of a polyol. The copolymer may comprise >=1 hydrophilic and >=1 hydrophobic monomer. The device can contain a material opaque to X-rays and/or a thread which can be opaque to X-rays. Used specifically for blocking oviducts for use as contraceptive, but also for sperm ducts, blood vessels, ureters etc. Complete sealing of teh duct is achieved and the device is easy to insert or remove.
