Abstract

A bicycle can be driven in the normal manner by the pedals which drive the sprocket(6) by means of the chain(25). An electric motor(2) forms an auxiliary drive and drives the large sprocket(5). Both sprockets(5, 6) are fitted with free wheels so that either form of drive can be used independently of the other or both forms can be used simultaneously. The electric motor(2) thus forms a supplementary drive which can be used on steep gradients.
