AS A FUNCTION OF THIS AND EACH IMAGE ELEMENT SIGNAL, TWO GRAY COMPONENTS ARE CALCULATED, USED WITH THE RESOLUTION COMPONENT AS THE CODED OUTPUTS FOR EACH BLOCK. APPLICABLE IN PARTICULAR TO THE CODING OF STILL IMAGES.
