Abstract

A simple equipment so used for stamping high resolution line patterns such as holographic data on thermoplastic carrier tape using a heated roller and metallic master pattern tape. The equipment ensures the rapid attainment of the necessary tape temperature and produces an even stable pattern. A master holographic or similar phase encoded pattern consisting of lines a few microns apart is carried on an endless master tape (1) which runs round a set of rollers (2, 4, 5) of which one (2) is pressed against a thermoplastic carrier tape (6) carried at that point by another roller (7). The master roller (2) consists of a drum of insulating material, with two rings (11, 12) supplied by a transformer (13) and slip rings (16, 17) so that a current flows laterally through the master pattern tape between the drum rings (11, 12), heating it up. A frequency is chosen dependent on the tape speed so that an even transfer of pattern occurs.
