Abstract

The excess sludge from biological waste sludge purificn. installations is treated by adding per 100 pts. of material in suspension 3.6-7.6 pts. (pref. 4 plus-or-minus 0.4 pts) of sulphuric ions, 2.4-5.2 pts (pref. 2.7 plus-or-minus 0.3 pts) of phosphoric ions, and 1-8-3.9 pts (pref. 2.1 plus-or-minus 0.3 pts) of Ca ions and then heating. The process uses relatively lower heating temp and pressure. The reactant used passifies steel and impedes encrustation; process does not release gs or result in disagreeable odours. The additives enhance the value of the treated sludge as a fertiliser. The proportions of the reactant may be achieved from sulphuric acid/calcium phosphate or sulphuric acid/phosphoric acid/lime or phosphoric acid/calcium sulphate and esp. the fertiliser superphosphate 18 plus-or-minus 2% P2O5 at 10-20 pts, pref. 10-12 pts per 100 pts material in suspension. The pH of the material after the addn. is adjusted if required to 5.5-6 with sulphuric acid. The heating may be carried out continuously or discontinuously in a pressure vessel at 155-180 degrees C, esp. 160-170 degrees C, and at 5-7.5 bams pressure for 45-90 mins, esp. 50-75 mins. The heating is pref. carried out by direct steam injection.
