Abstract

The identity card, for use by banks etc, comprises a plastics substrate(1), onto which a plastics layer(4) carrying a photograph of the card bearer is heat-sealed. A watermark pattern (3) is privided between the substrate(1) and the photograph and is visible through the clear areas of the latter. Pref. the watermark pattern(3) is printed on the opposite side of the plastics layer(4) to the photograph, or on the surface of the substrate(1) over which the photograph is applied. The visible parts of the watermark pattern(3) are compared with a reference pattern to check the validity of the car. This reference pattern may be printed on a transparent sheet or block which can be placed over the card.
