Abstract

The vehicle number plate reading unit is used for remotely reading the number plates (11) of stationary or mobile vehicle and it employs a television camera. Each number plate (11) has a succession of bands (5-28) running across it, perpendicular to the scanning direction of the camera, with adjacent bands having different reflection parameters. The television camera is used to detect the bands (15-25) across the number plate (11) so as to determine the position of the registration characters). The mean luminance of the successive bands (15-28) is detected, with the area (12) of the number plate (11) carrying the registration characters having a luminance which is much greater or much less than this mean value. Pref. the television camera is connected to a threshold circuit, with the threshold voltage obtained from the detected mean luminance value.
