Abstract

Process and plant is intended for the mfr. of ammonium nitrate for use as an artificial manure. Pure ammonium nitrate contains 35% by wt. of nitrogen but for certain reasons the nitrate-based manure should have a nitrogen content of 20-34% of nitrogen. The redn. in concn. is obtd. by the addition of a filler consisting of calcium sulphate in the anhydrite form. After the addition the mixt. is granulated. The conc. ammonium nitrate is supplied to the plant through pipe and the pump to a tank situated in the upper portion of an expansion chamber of the granulation tower. The tank is provided with a heater and a mixer; it is connected at the base with a collector fitted with spraying nozzles. Finely divided gypsum is placed in the hopper with an automatic dosing device. The fan introduces air into the pipe; it passes over the heater. The heated air picks up gypsum and converts it into anhydrite on its way to the tank where it is mixed with the molten ammonium nitrate. The sprayed mixt. forms granules in the tower; these are collected at the base and conveyed to a bagging unit. The prod. obtd. has a satisfactory water content; it is less hygroscopic than a mixt. diluted with calcium carbonate as the filler.
