Abstract

Vegetable matter, esp. tobacco, for human consumption has amts. of undesirable substances reduced by oxygenation and physico-chemical reaction. Esp. used for reducing amts. of alkaloids in tobacco. Process is simple and cheap; vegetable matter does not deteriorate and alkaloids eliminated can be collected. Oxygenation and physico-chemical reaction can be done in any order. Other treatments can be incorporated. Oxygenation is pref. using elementary O form H2O2 or O3. Physico-chemical reaction can be treatment with NH3 or other alkaline compds. to liberate alkaloids in salt form in vegetable. Alkaloids can also be solubilised and extracted using stream of water vapour. Proteolytic compds. can be broken down using biological or physical catalyst.
