Abstract

A plate heat exchanger, for recovering heat from the outgoing stale air in ventilation systems in dwellings and transferring the heat to the incoming clean air, consists of a shell with an insulating jacket and stale air and clean air entry pipes and exit pipes in which are a number of corrugated partitions with flat plates between them. The partitions and plates are made of plastic material transparent to radiation at low temps. The ends of the partitions are formed so as to make transverse channels leading to the inlet and outlet pipes. The flat plates are interposed only between the corrugated parts. The corrugations in the partitions all have the same height but have different widths, becoming progressively smaller away from the stable air entry and exit pipes. The exchanger offers less resistance to flow and therefore, consumes less energy than conventional plate exchangers because of the smoother flow passages. Construction is more economical because there are fewer joints to be made air-tight. The effects of frost formation when the temp. of the incoming clean air is below 0 degree C are less, so that it is not necessary to reduce flow or warm the air. Heat transfer is more efficient because of the use of materials transparent to radiation.
