Abstract

Toothpastes comprise an oil/water emulsion of pH 2-6. The aqueous phase contains H2O2 in an amount of 0.2-10 wt. wt. % (pref. 1-5, esp. 1.5-3.5 wt %). based on the total weight of water, oil, H2O and emulsifier. The oily phase makes up an amount of 2-50 (pref. 2-20, esp. 8-12) wt % of the total weight of oil, water, H2o and oil. The toothpastes pref. also contain an abrasive. The halogen peroxide acts as a bactericidal and virucidal disinfectant. Because it is contained in the aqueous phase of low viscosity it is capable of penetrating inot the hollows of the teeth and gaps in the gums. Furthermore, the hydrogen peroxide is stabilised by the hydrophobic components of the toothpaste.
