Abstract

A Portable Magnetic Tape Instrument is used to record fixed data from one or more microfilms together with variable data entered through a keyboard onto magnetic tape cassette for subsequent transmission over a telephone line. The choice of microfilm for storing the permanent data offers advantages of lower cost, higher recording density, and smaller equipment size over the use of magnetic cards, plus the ability to hold data in both machine and human readable form.
