Abstract

Odorant azeotropes with a minimum b.p., for addn. to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to serve as a warning of gas leaks, comprise (a) ethyl mercaptan and/or dimethyl sulphide and (b) a non-odorous, chemically inert azeotrope former which is capable of forming an azeotrope with component (a). The azeotrope former is pref. methyl formate, n-pentane, isopentane or an amylene (esp., a mixt. of 3-methyl-2-butene and 2-methyl-1-butene). The azeotropes give a uniform concn. of odorant in the vapour when the LPG is evapd.
