Abstract

A continuous method of determining fat content of milk by comparing the light energy reflected or absorbed by the milk with that of a reference sample. The wave-length of light is in the infra-red range between 4 and 7 mu m, with a band width of less than 0.025 mu m for which conditions milk fats are highly absorbent. The relationship between the signals received via the milk sample and the reference sample may be used to provide a direct reading of the required valves, either on an indicating or a recording instrument.
