Abstract
Continuous prepn. of high M.W. nylon 66 by continuous further condensation of low mol. wt. nylon 66 in a screw reactor by heating molten, low mol. wt. nylon 66 in a self-cleansing screw reactor, provided with at least one opening for discharging steam, for 5-45 mins. at 270-285 deg.C and a pressure of 50 mm Hg to 2 atm., with an energy supply to the screw of 0.03-0.2 kWh per kg. nylon. The process and apparatus enable low mol. wt. nylon 66 to be converted into high mol. wt. nylon 66 without risk of degradation or discolouration, of the nylon 66. The condensation is carried out under controlled temp. conditions with effective removal of steam. Uniform high mol. wt. nylon 66 is formed, without a content of gel material.
