Abstract

(Fig.1)The invention relates to a method and apparatus for breaking down the natural structure of lignin-containing fiber-based biomass and/or dissolving lignin and its corresponding ingredients in part or completely essentially with the help of lactic acid, lactic acid oligomer or these aqueous solutions in a continuous manner, so that said dissolving and/or cleavage of the molecules of the dissolved lignin and its corresponding ingredients into fragments with a molar mass of even well below 1000 g/mol takes place in a reactor (4) equipped with a temperature control (5) and a pressure-regulating feed pump (2) and a pressure reduction valve (6) using only elevated temperature and elevated pressure. The lactic acid and/or lactic acid oligomer of the product stream (9) can be recycled, and the low molecular mass compounds produced by cleavage are used as biofuels or as components or starting materials for such, as feed for a fermentation plant or other type of biorefinery, as components or starting materials for chemical products, or as components or additives for polymers or resins. (Fig. 1)
