Abstract

The telephone instrument is adapted for (a) handset of operation (b) hands free mode of operation using a microphone and loudspeaker responding to switch (R5), and (c) call announce mode of operation using the loudspeakers. A speech network (12) is powered from the two wire speech pair from a line to a telephone system to provide functions such as gain regulation and a hybrid for the instrument's speech part. A transmit path is for voice signals from the speaker. A receive path is for transmitting speech signals towards the microphone. - The speech network is switched between connection to the handset and connection to the transmit and receive paths. A voice switching network (16) switches one of the paths to an operative status and the other to an attenuated status responsive to a comparison of the amplitude of speech signals in the paths. The instrument can enable the paths for bidirectional signal transmission through the voice switching network and inactivate the handset microphone and transmitter. It can enable the receive path for coupling the speech network for the reception of speech signals for the announce mode.
