Abstract

An electric pulse generator provides a repetitive sequence of the stimulating pulses for transcutaneous input into the nerve fibres. Each sequence lasts from about thirty-two seconds to about forty seconds. The fibres are exposed to the bipolar rectangular pulse waveforms for a first predetermined period (S1) during which the pulses are of a given pulse width and repetition frequency. A thirty seconds period (S2) is followed by a second period of stimulation (S3) of between one and five seconds duration during which the pulse width and repetition frequency of the pulses differs from that in the first period. A period (S4) of between one and five seconds provides an absence of pulses. The periods (S3,S4) are varied at random from one sequence to another using a microprocessor-controlled system. Efficient stimulation of the nerve fibres is achieved but without noxious sensation and with freedom from the nerve cell adaptation phenomenon.
