Description

    FIELD OF INVENTION
  • The present invention relates to an improved lamp assembly. Particularly, present invention relates to a screw-able self locking interface between base and glass bulb of the lamp.
  • BACKGROUND/PRIOR ART
  • Most lamps utilize lamp base shells to facilitate insertion into and removal from a complementary lamp socket and to establish electrical contact between the lamp and the socket. Several structures have been developed to prevent the lamp base shell from separating from the lamp base, particularly when the lamp is removed from-the socket at the end of its useful life.
  • Prior art techniques use gluing, cementing and welding of lamp base shells to fix the shells to the glass base which is an additional process step. This needs more investments and therefore offers more expensive products. Further these are not clean processes and posses visual rejects of products. Moreover, gluing and cementing of plastic on glass lead to cracks in the glass due to the different expansion coefficients.
  • Now, reference may be made to the following Patents/Publication:
    US Patent No. 6,969,947 relates to a lamp that utilizes a lead free lamp base locking ring to secure a lamp base shell to the light source, lamp, or bulb, which eliminates the need for lead solder and/or welding to mechanically hold the base to a light transmissive envelope (also referred to as a body or bulb).
  • US Publication No. 20120187818 is directed to an LED light bulb equipped with light transparent shell fastening structure and particularly to an improved fastening structure to couple a light transparent shell with a heat sink. The light transparent shell includes a sphere and a neck extended from the sphere to wedge in the wedged groove. The sphere and neck have an inner wall surrounded to form a space to hold the light source baseboard and an outer wall on another side opposite to the inner wall. The neck has a longitudinal shell retaining portion on the outer wall corresponding and fastening to the first holding portion and at least one transverse shell retaining portion.
  • Till now, metal bases or ceramic bases are connected to glass due to the high temperatures of the glass bulbs.
  • Reference may be made to US5382869A disclosing a lamp base inner shell comprising a base and a wall extending from the periphery of said base, the wall having a plurality of slots extending from the free end thereof towards the base, the slots defining a number of tabs, at least one tab having an inwardly-extending projection, characterized in that at least one slot extends substantially to said base. The inner shell is used to electrically connect and secure a lamp base shell to a lamp tube.
  • However, any of the prior art patents does not provide any kind of lock mechanism for the base inner shell. Additionally, with a right turn screw, at end of life, turning out an old lamp out of the fixture can lead to loss of the screw connection if the lock mechanism breaks.
  • Therefore in view of the above prior arts there is a need to provide a means for locking between base of glass lamp and base shell. Now the availability of high temperature plastics makes it possible to make the interface in plastic for HID lamps.
  • Thus, in the present invention, an improved fixation method of glass bulb to base (plastic housing) is provided.
  • OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
  • Primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved lamp assembly having a screw-able self locking interface between a plastic housing and a glass bulb base.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide an easy, clean and cost effective connection process without cement, glue or welding.
  • Yet another object of the present invention is to provide left turn screw for mechanical fixation for turning a lamp out of the fixture so as to prevent the lamp base shell from separating from the lamp base.
  • Yet another object of the present invention is to prevent sudden separation of glass bulb from the plastic base shell.
  • Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved lamp base which is cost effective and provides an efficient assembly line operation.
  • Still another object of the present invention is to provide a simple and cost effective base end structure for electric lamps or similar devices.
  • Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear to those skilled in the art to which it appertains as the description proceeds, both by direct recitation thereof and by implication from the context.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • Lamp assemblies according to the present invention are defined by claims 1 to 3. Preferred embodinments are set out in the dependent claims 4 to 9.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
  • Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from the ensuing description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and wherein:
  • FIG. 1a and 1b show:
    base of the lamp and base shell structure according to the present invention;
    FIG. 2a shows:
    lamp base shell having knops on the ring and saw teeth structure in the base;
    FIG. 2b shows:
    click fingers in the base (plastic housing) for ratchet mechanism according to another embodiment of the present invention;
    Figure 3 shows:
    holes in the base and click fingers on the ring for ratchet mechanism according to another embodiment of the present invention;
    Figure 4 shows:
    holes in the ring for ratchet mechanism and left turn screw according to another embodiment of the present invention.
    DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
  • The present invention is directed to an improved lamp assembly. The lamp structure of instant invention comprising a glass lamp secured into base shell to form an improved lamp assembly. Now, reference may be made to fig. 1a indicating lower part of glass lamp (10), base (11) of which is provided with a plurality of dimples (12).
  • Reference may be made to fig. 1b showing base shell (13) in accordance with the present invention. Said base shell is having multitude of knops (15) to be clicked in the corresponding glass dimples (12).
  • The lamp base shell further comprises a cylindrical body having left turn screw (14), in which top of the cylindrical body is mounted with a number of knops along its circumference. Said base shell is secured to the lamp base (11) manually by placing it over the base (11) until the dimples (12) are mated with the corresponding knops (15) in the lamp base shell (13). The lamp base shell (13) is provided with left turn screw (14) for mechanical fixation for turning the lamp (10) out of the fixture so as to prevent the lamp base shell (13) from separating from the base (17) as shown in fig 2b. The base (17) constitutes a housing, which is preferably made of plastic. The plastic is again high temperature plastic to sustain high temperature during operation of the lamp i.e. when the lamp is switched on.
  • The lamp base shell (13) has saw teeth (16) on the other side where lamp is not attached. Said saw teeth are disposed along the circumference of the lamp base shell (13) as locking mechanism for use in a ratchet mechanism with the base (17), in which the base (17) has the provision of a number of click fingers (18) for ratchet mechanism as in fig. 2a and 2b.
  • According to another embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of holes (19) are provided in the base (17) and click fingers (18) on the lamp base shell (13) for ratchet mechanism as shown in fig. 3.
  • According to still another embodiment of the present invention, a multitude of holes (20) can be provided in the lamp base shell (13) and click fingers (18) are located on the base (plastic housing) (17) for ratchet mechanism as shown in fig.4.
  • Advantageous Features
    • An easy, clean and cost effective connection process without cement, glue or welding.
    • Cost effective lamp assembly, which provides an efficient assembly line operation.
    • Simple and inexpensive base end structure for electric lamps or similar devices.
