Definitions
- the invention relates to the handling of electronic payment transactions carried out using a mobile Device that uses a wireless data connection.
- EP 0 708 547 A2 described the use of mobile phones for payment. This takes advantage of that alone for the construction a connection because of its billing a secure one Identification of the participant is required. Therefore with this proposal the amount from the participant on his Mobile phone entered, confirmed by the network operator and sent to the retailer's cash register. It is also proposed a wireless connection between the cash register and the mobile phone to use at the checkout communication listens to or intercepts to the head office; notwithstanding that this connection is encrypted and not by third parties should be audible.
- WO 98/47116 described a payment system in which a mobile phone Payment confirmed.
- TSN Calculator used to process payment transactions makelt.
- the mobile phone sends a message to the TSN in which the receiving cash register and the amount are designated are.
- the TSN then sends a confirmation to the cash register.
- a payment system is in the published patent application DE 199 03 822 A1 described in which a mobile phone for confirmation the payment is used.
- the dealer station sends one Request to a matching facility, which in turn a Sends request to the mobile phone and with a suitable answer sends a confirmation to the dealer station.
- a wireless connection between the dealer station and the Mobile phones only serve to optimize the process, to transfer data that otherwise would have to be entered manually would.
- the adjustment device must Have transaction store in which started and transactions that have not yet been completed are stored, while the connection to the mobile phone is established and is dismantled. Therefore, the buyer's response time is in the connection time included, making systems of increased reliability are needed.
- the object of the present invention is a payment system indicate that improves on the above proposals is.
- a short-range wireless connection between a cash register (or another dealer terminal, from which a payment is to be booked) and a mobile phone (or another device with a cellular network or other data network) used to pay the Amount and the address of the cash register to the mobile phone to transmit.
- This process takes place 'offline', i.e. without Cellular connection.
- the customer confirms the amount the cell phone connects to a payment center builds up and sends a money order there.
- connection can be re-established immediately be dismantled; with a suitable design, in particular the 'short messages service' (SMS) can be used, the the message for a flat rate without time-related connection costs transmitted.
- SMS 'short messages service'
- the payment center checks the Money order and now sends to those in the money order contain the address of the cash register a payment confirmation. Upon receipt of the payment confirmation, the Checkout completed.
- This connection must also not held for a long time; the payment center also needs does not need a transaction store since none bidirectional communication is necessary.
- the close connection is used, to send the payment confirmation to the cashier, using it no own network connection required. Instead either the connection from the mobile phone to the payment center maintained or rebuilt by the headquarters. Both options can vary in the short term Network load, time of day, region, etc. Prefers this function is carried out transparently in the mobile phone, for example, by using an IP network in which the cell phone router function. With the introduction of GPRS as a mobile radio system, where a volume fee this is the procedure instead of a time charge particularly useful.
- a cash register 10 is shown, which here for a any device that triggers a payment process.
- Near the cash register there is a customer 22 who is using a mobile Device 22, in particular a mobile phone, has.
- the Customer 22 operates the mobile device 20 via an interface with buttons and displays, symbolized here as connection 24.
- a wireless first Connection 12 between cash register 10 and mobile device 20 set up become.
- the known cellular network with the known Standards such as GSM, GPRS and UTMS are used.
- the payment server does not have to be assigned to the network provider so that a local radio network ('wireless LAN '), e.g. according to the IEEE 802.11 standard can be used if no mobile phone is used as a mobile device is or this additionally has this interface.
- a local radio network e.g. according to the IEEE 802.11 standard
- a third data connection 32 between the Payment center 30 and the cash register 10 used can as detailed below, especially a fully or partially wired landline of known type be because both the payment center 30 and the cash register 10 are stationary.
- a fourth connection between the payment center 30 and one or more bank servers 40 are required.
- the customer 22 has the one used in each case Bank server operating bank and a business relationship can usually use his mobile device 20 to keep an account balance query and in particular determine whether and how described in more detail below, via the fourth connection 42 his account has been debited.
- the invention is directed to a payment process that used after a customer has selected goods and so far either with cash, a customer card or a credit card would pay.
- the one used by the dealer for this Device is referred to below as a cash register.
- a cash register Of course are also vending machines etc. or service machines meant.
- a wireless data connection For this purpose, a near-field radio network such as Uses bluetooth; other connection techniques are also possible like IrDA or proprietary connections.
- the cash register sends to the mobile device via this connection the customer's record, which is a request for payment represents.
- This request for payment consists at least of the amount and an identification of the cash register.
- Prefers will also be one generated by the cash register that identifies the payment consecutive number, in the following transaction number called to be included. This can also be implicit or explicit be included in the identification of the cash register. Further details such as are useful but not necessary the purpose of payment, a description of the goods, an account and the legible name of the cashier. A cryptographic Backup does not appear to be necessary.
- a request for payment This includes at least the amount and identification of the Cashbox; usually also the transaction number and the other fields. It is preferred to form the payment instruction the request for payment is digitally signed.
- the rule is an identification or account number of the customer stored in the mobile phone and is used in education added to the payment request; whether it's from the signature is insignificant. This payment request created in this way is now going to a payment center sent over the cellular network if it is a Mobile phone. In the simplest case, this is done a pre-registered address.
- the transmission can be done for example by means of an SMS message.
- a data connection to the payment center be set up, for example via the Internet protocols 'udp / ip', 'tcp / ip', 'http' or 'https', and then the message will be delivered.
- Other data connections are easily possible; can also via 'PPP' Internet access will be provided.
- GSM networks rather a modem connection is used; in GPRS and UTMS networks are already packet-oriented protocols available.
- This account number is preferably already in the payment request included and comes with the money order transmitted and then in the payment confirmation with recorded and signed. In this case there is a previous one Registration of the cash register or the account of the cash register owner unnecessary. The cash register only has to go to the public Keys have not been falsified because the digital Signature of the payment confirmation the payment center contains that the latter guarantees the payment.
- the cash register can be reached via a network, in particular the Internet, here in particular the 'UDP / IP' or 'TCP / IP' protocol.
- the payment center receives an IP address with a port number to which the connection is to be established.
- a 'universal resource locator', URL which is widely known as an Internet address.
- Such a URL for a payment confirmation could be: "Https://cr7.pdb.pay.fuelworld.com/20000112/132305?xyz"
- cash register 7 would itself be an HTTP or HTTPS server, by adding '? xyz' in the context of the CGI syntax Data are passed. Because the HTTP or HTTPS protocol used for the connection TCP / IP, the Payment center be sure that the message is with the Cashier has arrived. Alternatively, checkout a store a server can be assigned, which then has a fixed Connection signals the payment made to the cash register. As a rule, provision is made for further security be that the box office receives receipt by a signed reply approved.
- this variant is for package-oriented and logs billed by volume such as GPRS or UTMS particularly attractive.
- the payment center can do this per item or as Collective credit effect. But it is also possible that the payment confirmations are collected in the cash register and then collected to the payment center or another agreed to send the payment confirmations checks, the amounts accumulated and a collective credit causes.
- Digital signature procedures are generally through textbooks known in cryptography; are currently preferred asymmetrical methods, also called 'public key', are used. Further information can also be found in the above publication WO 97/52151 can be taken.
- the payment confirmation can additionally contain its own public key, which is signed by a third party, such as a dealer association.
- a third party such as a dealer association.
- This process is only necessary between the payment center and the dealer association and not bilaterally between each payment center and each cash register.
- the operator of the mobile radio network can provide his customers with their public key signed by himself.
- the payment center then only needs to know the public keys of all network operators and not the keys of all users of a mobile device.
