A data carrier (22) such as a paper of value, ID card, bank note or the like having at least one security element applied to said data carrier which has a serial number (24, 25, 26) individualizing the data carrier (22) out of a series of data carriers, characterized in that the security element consists of at least a first part (16, 32, 36) and a second part (17, 34, 38), and each part represents the serial number (24, 25, 26) only partly and has part of the figures of the serial number (24, 25, 26), and the two parts are disposed on the data carrier (22) in such a way as to form a complete serial numnumber, and the first and second parts (16, 17, 32, 34, 36, 38) are either disposed offset from each other or have a different color.
  8. The data carrier of any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the first and second parts (28, 30) of the security element are disposed perpendicular to each other.
  9. The data carrier of claim 7, characterized in that the second part (17, 34, 38) of the security element has a part of the figures of the serial number which is different from the first part (16, 32, 36) of the security element, and the two parts are disposed on the data carrier (22) in such a way as to form together the complete serial number.
  10. The data carrier of claim 7 or 9, characterized in that the first (32, 36) and second (34, 38) parts of the security element are disposed offset from each other.
  11. The data carrier of any of claims 1 to 10, characterized in that the first (16, 28, 32, 36, 42) and/or second part (17, 30, 34, 38, 40) of the security element have a fluorescent color.
  12. The data carrier of any of claims 1 to 11, characterized in that the security element is provided on the data carrier (22) several times.
  13. A method for producing a data carrier (22) such as a paper of value, ID card, bank note or the like having at least one security element applied to said data carrier (22) which has a serial number (24, 25, 26) individualizing the data carrier (22) out of a series of data carriers, characterized in that the security element consists of at least a first part (16, 28, 32, 36, 42) and a second part (17, 30, 34, 38, 40) and both parts are applied to the data carrier (22), the first part representing the serial number only partly and the second part representing the serial number partly or completely.
  14. The method for producing a data carrier of claim 13, characterized in that the first (16, 28, 32, 36) and second (17, 30, 34, 38) parts of the security element are disposed on the data carrier (22) in such a way that the first part is supplemented by the second part to form the complete serial number.
  15. The method for producing a data carrier of claim 14, characterized in that the first part (16, 32, 36) of the security element has one part of the figures of the serial number and the second part (17, 34, 38) of the security element has a second part of the figures of the serial number, and the two parts are applied to the data carrier (22) in such a way that a complete serial number arises.
  16. The method for producing a data carrier of claim 13 or 14, characterized in that the first (28) and second (30) parts of the security element are applied perpendicular to each other.
  17. The method for producing a data carrier of any of claims 13 to 15, characterized in that the first (32, 36) and second (34, 38) parts of the security element are applied offset from each other.
  18. The method for producing a data carrier of any of claims 13 to 17, characterized in that the first part (16, 28, 32, 36, 42) and/or the second part (17, 30, 34, 38, 40) of the security element is applied in a fluorescent color.
  19. The method for producing a data carrier of any of claims 13 to 18, characterized in that the first part (16, 28, 32, 36, 42) of the security element is applied in a different color from the second part (17, 30, 34, 38, 40).
  20. The method for producing a data carrier of any of claims 13 to 19, characterized in that the first (16,28,32,36,42) and/or second (17, 30, 34, 38, 40) part of the security element is applied with a numbering machine having figure wheels.
  21. The method for producing a data carrier of claim 20, characterized in that at least one figure wheel of the numbering machine has blind figures (14, 15) so that no figures are transferred to the data carrier (22) at these places.
  22. The method for producing a data carrier of claim 13 wherein the second part (40) represents the serial number completely, characterized in that the first part (42) is integrated into an element which is difficult to imitate graphically.
