Knife folder for cross folding sheets (7) fed individually by a piece of apparatus, having a pair of folding rollers (11) arranged at right angles to the direction in which the sheets are fed and which rotate in opposite directions, as well as a knife (2, 31, 41) which deflects each of the incoming sheets between the pair of folding rollers (11) and is driven in a more or less regular timing cycle, characterised in that within a folding cycle the speed of the knife (2) can be varied relative to the speed of the sheets (7) in order to produce different formats of the folded sheets (7), and that the sheets (7) are folded as they move and without any stop device.
  2. Machine according to claim 1, characterised in that the knife is moved in such a way that its speed at the moment of folding is lower than its average speed.
  3. Machine according to claim 1, characterised in that the knife (2) is adapted to be rotated.
  4. Machine according to claims 2 or 3, characterised in that a further controlled or regulated driving motion is superimposed on the speed profile of the knife (2, 31, 41) during a cycle.
  5. Machine according to any of claims 1 to 4, characterised in that the travelling speed of the apparatus for feeding sheets (7) to the folding rollers (11) can be controlled or regulated.
  6. Machine according to claim 5, characterised in that the travelling speed of the sheets (7) to be folded can be controlled or regulated, at least in the zone in which the knife (2, 31, 41) is active.
  7. Machine according to any of claims 1 to 6, characterised by the provision of a counterweight which can be accelerated in the opposite direction to the knife (2) or a knife holder (1).
  8. Machine according to any of claims 1 to 7, characterised in that the knife holder (1) is powered by a servomotor (17).
  9. Machine according to any of claims 1 to 8, characterised in that the knife (2) is arranged on a rotatable knife holder (1) and that the knife holder (1) turns at a constant speed of rotation, whereas a cyclic and non-uniform motion is superimposed on the knife's movement.
  10. Line for performing jobbing work with a machine according to any of claims 1 to 9, characterised in that viewed in the direction of travel at least one printing unit and one guillotine (63) are arranged ahead of it and a delivery unit after it.
  11. Line for performing jobbing work according to claim 10, characterised in that the speed of the knife holder during a folding cycle of the folding machine (30) can be controlled or regulated by means of a controlling or regulating device (17).
  12. Line for performing jobbing work according to claim 10 or 11, characterised in that viewed in the direction of travel a former (67) for making a lengthways fold in the paper web (64) is arranged ahead of the guillotine (63).
  13. Line for performing jobbing work according to claim 11 or 12, characterised in that the printing unit and the folding section are arranged in line or at an angle or in a "U" configuration in relation to one another.
  14. Line for performing jobbing work according to any of claims 11 to 13, characterised in that viewed in the direction of travel there are angle bars (66) arranged after the printing machine.
