Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for printing magnetically readable characters, in which magnetically readable color is transferred from a single-use ink ribbon to a recording medium, the recording medium and ink ribbon being moved and the print head being held stationary. the use of a suitable matrix needle printhead and its manufacture.
In practice, the magnetically
The printing process with full-contour printing units, e.g. the individual letters are attached to the type levers of a typewriter, works very slowly. The printing units used for this are large and expensive.
It has also been proposed to use type disks (so-called daisy wheels) for a printer that prints faster than full-contour printing units. Type plate printers can print 30 to 40 characters / s. However, this printing process can no longer print much faster due to the inertia of the type wheel or its drive parts.
In addition, the type plate printers are also very large and the service life of such type plates is approximately 60,000 characters, i.e. 60 typewriter pages limited, because the individual types are made of plastic and are operated by means of a steel hammer and are therefore subject to considerable wear.
A dot matrix print head using a matrix needle print head for the production of a magnetically readable MICR font based on a magnetic ink ribbon for a recording medium, on which printing is carried out by means of printing needles, is described in the older priority EP 0452 934 A1. The tips of the printing needles are provided with a bar-shaped, vertically arranged printing surface. However, it cannot be derived from the description how the ink ribbon and the print head are moved relative to one another. In addition, it cannot be inferred from this how the bar-shaped, vertically arranged pressure surfaces of the pressure needles are to be designed in order to produce a wider or narrower step. Then the problem of the older proposal of how the individual printing surfaces can hit the recording medium evenly is not solved. For this purpose, only a lateral processing by milling to generate the printing area width is described.
From DE 32 13 937 A1 a heat-sensitive magnetic transmission element is known which allows the generation of a printed magnetic image by means of a thermal printing device. The reading is made by a magnetic head. The "printing" takes place by means of a heat-sensitive transfer layer due to a ferromagnetic powder substance, and the ink ribbon or single-use ink ribbon to be used is also described. Further information on the process, the use of a matrix needle printhead and a process for its production are not included.
The invention is therefore based on the object of proposing a faster printing process for characters that can be read magnetically (such as, for example,
The stated object is achieved according to the invention in the version of the claims for the contracting states AT, BE, CH, IT, LI, NL by alternatively recording media and ink ribbon being stationary and the printhead being moved, the ink ribbon being advanced during printing pauses and that in the basic form vertical, bar-shaped printing areas are transferred to the record carrier, which are assembled into a character according to the principle of a matrix, and that the respective printing elements with the bar-shaped printing areas are controlled from one or more columns of printing elements, each with bar-shaped printing area.
This makes it possible to write magnetically readable fonts much faster, including the fonts CMC 7 and E13B. Significantly smaller printing units can be used for this, which saves costs. Such printing units achieve printing speeds of several hundred characters per second. Of particular importance, however, are the printing surfaces, which are different from conventional matrix printers. The
The use of a single-use ink ribbon must be taken into account by controlling the ink ribbon appropriately when printing. Here, the recording medium and the single-use ink ribbon can first be stationary and the matrix needle printhead is moved and the ink ribbon is fed during printing breaks or the recording medium and the single-use ink ribbon are moved and the matrix needle printhead stands still. In all cases, a relative movement between the recording medium and the ribbon is advantageously avoided during printing. The wax-like layer of the ink ribbon is transferred to the recording medium (eg the paper) by heat or shock by the print head. At the point at which a line character is transferred from the single-use ink ribbon to the recording medium, the wax layer on the single-use ink ribbon is completely missing after the transfer.
According to further features, the control can also take place in such a way that when the print head and the stationary recording medium are moved, the single-use ink ribbon is moved in sections together with the print head.
It is also possible that, in the case of a stationary print head, only the ink ribbon is moved in sections during printing pauses, without the disadvantageous relative movement occurring.
According to further features, a simple method of transporting the single-use ink ribbon is that the single-use ink ribbon is moved by the length of the line section to be printed during a print-free back-fitting movement of the matrix needle printhead in the beginning of line position against the advance movement during printing.
A better utilization of the single-use ink ribbon is possible by the following control: It is proposed that the single-use ink ribbon be moved within two pauses between two characters in the same direction as the matrix needle printhead, namely by the length between two adjacent characters. Of course, the disposable ink ribbon is not transported while characters are being printed. The used distance of the single-use ink ribbon is transported immediately before the next line is printed, so that a section of unprinted ink ribbon is available for the area to be printed before printing a line.
The use of a matrix needle printhead for printing magnetically readable MICR characters, in which magnetically readable color can be transferred from a single-use ink ribbon to a recording medium, serves as the basis for fast printing.
However, the magnetic legibility of the characters is only achieved if the printing needles have a bar-shaped printing surface at their tips, which is perpendicular to the width of the recording medium. With such pressure needles or heat-transferring contact elements, the magnetically readable characters can advantageously only be written.
It was found on the basis of tests that when using a matrix printhead identified above, it is particularly advantageous if the width of the vertical, bar-shaped printing surface is 0.08 to 0.19 mm.
A method for producing a matrix needle printhead for printing magnetically readable characters with printing needles guided in a front housing in a guide plate and with electromagnetic coil drives arranged in a rear housing and intermediate layers which can be inserted between the front and rear housings, permits a particularly advantageous design of the required matrix needle printhead . This goal is achieved in that the intermediate layers provided with a recess for the printing needle group are removed, that the printing needles are then grinded in a wedge-shaped or stamp-like manner at their tips in the installed state in the form of a vertical printing surface and that the intermediate layers are then inserted again .
