Description

The invention relates to a method for checking the correct processing of banknotes in automatic banknote sorting systems, which sorts certain amounts of money according to predefinable criteria into different categories, in which partial quantities are possibly destroyed and in which after the processing of a predefinable amount of money or after a certain unit of time Protocol is created in which, among other things, information about the processed banknotes is registered.

For some time now, banknotes have been used for sorting banknotes, which automatically or manually feed banknotes, pass them in sequence through a sensor system and, depending on the task and sensor result, sort them into different categories according to predefined criteria.

Such a machine is known for example from DE-PS 27 60 269. An essential task of this known sorting machine is to sort banknotes flowing back from the circulation of money into banknotes which are usable and not usable for the further circulation. Banknotes are sorted into a third category, which are suspect of counterfeit money, cannot be identified or cannot be sorted for other reasons. The notes identified as unusable for the further circulation must be reliably destroyed, which can happen, for example, by the notes passing through a shredder module integrated in the sorting machine, which cuts each note into small snippets that make it impossible to restore notes.

Money processing at the sorting machine level can be roughly divided into three steps. The operator of the machine receives a certain amount of money at the beginning of his shift, and acknowledges receipt of it.

The amount of money received is fed to the machine and sorted, for example, into the categories mentioned. After the end of the shift, the operator transfers the sorted amounts of money together with a printout that records all relevant processes to an institution that continues to process the money.

As described in DE-OS 27 60 269 in detail, the sorting machine is provided with a printing device, by means of which, among other things, a so-called shift log can be printed out. In this protocol, among other data, the sums of the banknotes stored in the intended categories are registered. The sum of all partial quantities in the categories must correspond to the volume of money supplied to the machine and acknowledged by the operator. On the basis of the log data, it is fundamentally possible to check the individual amounts of money by counting them again, for example, so that no banknote can disappear undetected. However, this simple form of checking is no longer possible in the case of destroyed notes, so that a different form of security checking is necessary in particular with regard to these notes in order to be protected against possible manipulation.

The object of the invention is therefore to ensure the highest possible protection against manipulation when using an automatic banknote sorting machine with an integrated switching device.

The essence of the invention is to use the cryptographic process to calculate a value from the log data to be protected, which value is printed out one or more times on the log extract. This calculation can only be carried out by authorized bodies who are aware of the cryptographic process or of those involved in this process Have secrets. Every falsification, insertion or removal of log data leads to a different authenticity value, which can be easily determined during a check.

According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, an authenticity code is calculated to secure the protocol data and, to check the authenticity of the protocol, this code is recalculated using the same method and checked for identity with the previously determined one.

The formation of so-called authentication codes has long been known in long-distance communication. However, the use of this method, which is known per se, offers a technically easy to implement option for securing log data of a banknote sorting device, especially the data of destroyed banknotes, the correct processing of which cannot easily be verified, is very effectively protected against manipulation. Of course, the method can also be used effectively in sorting devices without a shredder function in order to ensure the authenticity of the protocols created.

According to a development of the invention, time-variable log data are included in the calculation of the authenticity marking in order to be able to clearly differentiate logs with the same or similar sorting results.

The authentication code is calculated in each case before a log printout in a corresponding security module of the sorting device. Depending on the agreed organizational guidelines, one or more protocols are provided with the associated authenticity codes for each shift or processing period can also be saved in the machine. Saved authenticity codes can be checked again the following day or later for control purposes.

Darin zeigen:

Further advantages and developments of the invention result from the subclaims and from the following description of an embodiment of the invention with reference to the figures. In it show:

Die Fig. 1 zeigt in stark schematisierter Form eine mögliche Konfiguration einer Sortiervorrichtung mit den wesentlichen Funktionselementen.1 shows in a highly schematic form a possible configuration of a sorting device with the essential functional elements.

The banknotes are separated from an input container 6, passed through a sensor path 5 and fed to different output containers 8, 9 or 10 depending on the sensor result. The banknotes destroyed by a shredder device 7 are collected in the container 8. In the container 9 still usable notes for the further circulation and in the container 10 so-called manual rework notes can be collected. The operator of the machine has to check the latter notes carefully, for example because the notes are suspected of being counterfeit or not identifiable. The dialogue with the machine is possible via a console 4. The sorting machine is equipped with a printer 3 for printing out logs 2 about the money processing.

An example of such a protocol is shown in FIG. 2. Depending on the organizational requirements, different types of protocols can be printed, but this will not be dealt with in more detail here.

Dieses Protokoll wird gemeinsam mit den bearbeiteten und in den genannten Kategorien sortierten Banknoten einer das Geld weiter bearbeitenden Institution übergeben.FIG. 2 shows a so-called shift protocol, which an operator can print out after a certain volume of money has been processed. This protocol, together with the processed banknotes and sorted in the categories mentioned, is handed over to an institution further processing the money.

In addition to a date and time, the machine number or an operator ID number can be recorded on the log. The sum of the banknotes or the destroyed notes (abbreviated as Shr notes) stored in the different categories (fitable notes for short U notes and manual reworking notes for short called HN notes) are also printed out on the log. The information mentioned represents only a selection of the possible protocol data. In addition to the information mentioned, according to the invention, an authenticity marking 15 is now provided on the protocol, which is calculated from all or from a specific selection of protocol data via a cryptographic process. It is preferable to include in the process those data that are to be protected against falsification. In any case, the authenticity marking has a clear connection to the data involved. Each change, addition or deletion of data leads to a different authenticity marking, with which any manipulation of the log data is immediately detected.

The authenticity marking can be calculated in a security module 12 of the control and computing unit 11 of the sorting device. This module contains the algorithm or the secret key for calculating the identification. The module must therefore be protected against unauthorized access. Variables that are variable in time should be included in the calculation of the authenticity marking, for example the date or time or other values that fulfill this purpose, so that each protocol is unique. The authenticity marking can be printed out several times on the log, for example, as shown in FIG. 2, before and after the actual log data.

The authenticity of the protocol can be checked with any device that has the security module 12 implemented in the sorting machine and is loaded with the appropriate algorithm or key. The data included in the calculation of the authenticity marking, such as the sums of the U-BN, the HN-BN, and the Shr-BN, are entered manually via a keyboard of the device. From this, the security module calculates the authenticity identification and shows it on a display, so that the operator can compare the indicated identification with the identification printed on the log. If there is an identity, it is ensured that the checked log data is not corrupt. Despite the simplicity of both the creation of the authenticity marking and the checking of the same, the method according to the invention achieves a high degree of security with regard to the correct processing of banknotes in automatic banknote sorting systems. The test can also be carried out on the shredder machine itself after an operating mode provided for this purpose has been selected via the operator console 4. The result is displayed on the operator panel screen. For the sake of clarity, the representation of a separate verification device, which has at least the security module 12 and an operating console 4, has been omitted.

The authenticity marking of the log data can also be checked with the aid of a terminal, which is connected to the sorting machine via the interface 13 1 is connected. The necessary data are transmitted to the terminal, from which the authenticity code, as described above, is calculated in a corresponding security module of the terminal.

The authenticity markings of several logs can be stored, for example, under the log number or other suitable data in a memory of the sorting machine, so that old logs can still be checked at a later time.
