Definitions
- the invention relates to a process for the production of pulp (pulp), which generally means technical cellulose products of more or less high purity, as is typically used for the production of paper or products made from regenerated or chemically modified cellulose used.
- pulp generally means technical cellulose products of more or less high purity, as is typically used for the production of paper or products made from regenerated or chemically modified cellulose used.
- DE-A-3'445'132 describes a process for the production of pulp which is based on the use of an at least predominantly, i.e. is based on at least 50% by weight of digestion liquid consisting of acetic acid and is therefore also referred to as the Acetosolv process.
- This known digestion liquid contains small amounts besides acetic acid, i.e. typically those of less than 1% by weight of hydrochloric acid.
- the cellulose-containing raw materials are generally digested at elevated temperatures and practically at normal pressure.
- the Acetosolv process offers considerable advantages in terms of reduced environmental pollution, but is not yet optimal in economic terms;
- the disadvantage is in particular the use of sodium hydroxide solution and / or organic solvents for the final washing of the pulp which is also referred to as "extraction" in order to remove the lignin more or less completely;
- Another disadvantage is the relatively high consumption of the peroxide serving as a bleaching agent for hardwood pulp and an often insufficient whiteness of softwood pulp.
- the object of the invention is now a process of the type described in DE-A-3'445'132, which retains the advantages of the Acetosolv process in terms of reduced environmental pollution, but which offers improved economy. It has been found that, surprisingly, this object can be achieved not only without loss of environmental protection, but even with a further reduction in the environmental impact by a method having the features specified in claim 1. Preferred embodiments of the method according to the invention have the features specified in claims 2 to 12.
- the customary cellulose-containing raw materials such as softwoods and hardwoods or annual plants, can be used and prepared in a manner known per se, e.g. be mechanically crushed.
- the digestion liquid can also contain formic acid and / or propionic acid in such proportions that a total of over 50% by weight and preferably at least 70% by weight, in particular 85 to 98% by weight, of the digestion liquid from a C, s-fatty acid or mixture of such acids with practically any relative proportions of the individual acids.
- mineral acid typically used in amounts below 1% by weight in the digestion liquid, e.g. in proportions of 0.05 to 0.5% by weight, other and preferably volatile mineral acids which do not have an oxidizing effect on cellulose can be used instead of or in addition to HCl.
- a typical digestion liquid for carrying out the process according to the invention thus consists of 85 to 95% by weight Ci-s fatty acid or mixture (calculated on the anhydrous acid or acids), 0.05 to 0.5% by weight HCl (calculated anhydrous) and water as the remaining portion.
- the digestion temperature is usually between 50 C and the boiling point of the digestion liquid under process pressure. It is preferably carried out in such a way that the digestion does not require significantly more than 300 minutes of treatment, which can generally be achieved at temperatures from 100 ° C. to 115 ° C.
- the digestion stage of the process according to the invention can be carried out practically at normal pressure; Increased pressures can be used, but usually do not bring any advantages that would justify the higher costs of the pressure equipment then required. In general, the digestion is carried out at ambient pressure and generally at pressures not exceeding 1.5 bar; typical preferred digestion temperatures are between 105 and 112 C.
- the working conditions of the extraction stage of the process according to the invention are generally chosen so that the kappa value of the pulp obtained by the extraction treatment is below 25. This value is determined in the usual way (see leaflet IV / 37/80 of the Technical Committee for Chemical Pulp and Paper Testing in the Association of Pulp and Paper Chemists and Engineers, BR Germany) and is generally used as a measure of the residual lignin content of pulps.
- kappa numbers of under 25 with aqueous C1-3 fatty acid at temperatures in the range from 50 to 110 ° C., preferably between 100 and 105 ° C., practically under normal pressure with an extraction time of typically between 10 and 100 minutes can be reached.
- the water content of the C, -3-fatty acid in the extraction stage is between 5 and 10%, based on the weight of the extraction liquid.
- the pulp thus obtained is preferably extracted according to the invention until kappa numbers of not more than 10 are reached.
- the pulp obtained by digestion to a mechanical Zerfaserungs behalf is subjected with a stirrer or refiner, preferably in the presence of a liquid phase which, in turn, advantageously the C - 3 fatty acid or mixture, which also the preceding digestion and the subsequent extraction treatment has been used or should be used.
- the pulp is usually subjected to a bleaching treatment in the modified manner described in more detail below, using ozone;
- a bleaching treatment the Ci-3 fatty acid already used in the previous steps or / and a liquid medium which displaces it is preferably used in turn, which serves as an entrainer for water in the recovery of the fatty acid by azeotropic distillation, in particular an ester of C 1 - 3 fatty acid with C1-6 alkanol, e.g. butyl acetate.
- the pulp obtained can, if desired, also be freed from the fatty acid or the fatty acid ester without washing with water and this can be recovered in a comparatively environmentally friendly manner.
- the process is carried out in a countercurrent manner in such a way that the fatty acid flowing from a subsequent processing step is used without special intermediate processing for the preceding process step and is only provided with the additives required in each case.
- a carousel reactor known per se is particularly preferably used for carrying out the process.
- the method according to the invention can be carried out practically free of pollutants because it does not produce any waste water and no pollutant-containing flue gases. Since solid inorganic chemicals are not used for digestion or bleaching, as is the case to a large extent with conventional processes, washing with water is not necessary.
- the digestion chemicals used preferably acetic acid and hydrochloric acid, can be recovered by evaporation. During bleaching, peracetic acid and ozone break down into acetic acid and oxygen. The lignin, if it is burned to cover the energy requirement, does not result in smoke gases containing S0 2 .
- the digestion is preferably carried out continuously or batchwise according to the method described in DE-A-3'445'132.
- a discontinuous digestion by refluxing with five times the amount of 93% acetic acid containing 0.16 to 0.2% HCI is advisable; for technical operation, countercurrent extraction, e.g. with a carousel extractor, preferred because of the lower acetic acid consumption.
- the extraction of the digested pulp is expediently carried out with hot aqueous C, -3- fatty acid of the same concentration as is used for the digestion.
- the fatty acid can, as already indicated, first be used as an extracting agent and then as a disintegrating agent, without intermediate distillation of the fatty acid, mechanical defibration of the soft-boiled pulp before the extraction is advisable.
- the chamfer tion can be done in the laboratory by whipping with a strong stirrer in excess acetic acid, whereas on a technical scale a refiner is usually more suitable.
- the bleaching treatment can be selected according to the type of wood and the kappa number of the extracted pulp.
- acetic acid as a medium for pulp bleaching with hydrogen peroxide, which is converted into peracetic acid, has already been described in DE-A-3'445'132. It has now been found that ozone as a bleaching agent in Ci-a fatty acid or acetic acid is much more effective and selective than in aqueous media. Ozone in acetic acid is suitable for the delignification stage, which is carried out with chlorine in conventional pulp bleaching and leads to chlorinated organic compounds in the bleaching effluent.
- pine pulp with 2% ozone results in a decrease in the kappa number from 22.5 to 4.2 without the DP value falling significantly. If one starts from pulps with lower kappa numbers, which is possible by suitable extraction with acetic acid, one gets by with smaller amounts of ozone.
- Subsequent bleaching with 1 to 2% H 2 0 2 in C 1-3 fatty acid or acetic acid or in fatty acid esters, e.g. butyl acetate enables whiteness of over 80% ISO to be achieved with hardwood pulp, while a third bleaching stage with up to is usually achieved with softwood cellulose 1.5% ozone may be required.
- the third bleaching stage can also be omitted for softwood pulp if it is assumed that the kappa numbers are very low after the extraction.
- the temperature in ozone bleaching can be at room temperature and should not exceed 50 ° C. Lowering the temperature by cooling can also be expedient.
- the preferred temperature for ozone bleaching is between 10 and 30 C, with a bleaching time of typically between 5 and 100 min, preferably 30 to 60 min.
- the bleaching temperature when using hydrogen peroxide is between 50 and 100 ° C., preferably between 60 and 80 ° C., with a bleaching time of two to six hours.
- the fatty acid or acetic acid can be removed from the pulp by pressing and subsequent washing with fatty acid ester or butyl acetate and water.
- fatty acid ester or butyl acetate and water instead of the preferred butyl acetate, other organic solvents which form a low-boiling azeotrope with water can also be used.
- the removal of the butyl acetate from the pulp can also advantageously be carried out using superheated steam.
- the butyl acetate then serves as an entrainer for water in the purification of the fatty acid by distillation.
- Pine wood chips (Pinus sylvestris) are, similar to Section A of Example 1, but digested for six hours and washed with hot acetic acid. After that, the pulp has the following key figures:
- pulp 50 g of pulp, obtained according to Example 2, are pressed to a moisture content of 35% and then mechanically comminuted.
- the shredded material is placed in a flask and treated with 1 to 3.3% ozone (0.05 g ozone / min, 0.06 g ozone / lt oxygen). After an exposure time of 10 to 40 minutes, the pulp is washed with acetic acid and then with water.
Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a process for the production of pulp (pulp), which generally means technical cellulose products of more or less high purity, as is typically used for the production of paper or products made from regenerated or chemically modified cellulose used.
The classic and large-scale processes for the production of pulp from the typical raw materials, in particular the sulfite and the sulfate process, are problematic due to environmental pollution, mainly because of the sulfur compounds required for conventional pulping liquids, the chlorine-containing bleaches and the difficulties in removing or Utilization of by-products such as lignin.
Der Aufschluss der Cellulose enthaltenden Rohstoffe erfolgt beim Acetosolv-Verfahren allgemein unter erhöhten Temperaturen und praktisch bei Normaldruck.DE-A-3'445'132 describes a process for the production of pulp which is based on the use of an at least predominantly, i.e. is based on at least 50% by weight of digestion liquid consisting of acetic acid and is therefore also referred to as the Acetosolv process. This known digestion liquid contains small amounts besides acetic acid, i.e. typically those of less than 1% by weight of hydrochloric acid. In the acetosolv process, the cellulose-containing raw materials are generally digested at elevated temperatures and practically at normal pressure.
The Acetosolv process offers considerable advantages in terms of reduced environmental pollution, but is not yet optimal in economic terms; In addition to a relatively high consumption of acetic acid, the disadvantage is in particular the use of sodium hydroxide solution and / or organic solvents for the final washing of the pulp which is also referred to as "extraction" in order to remove the lignin more or less completely; Another disadvantage is the relatively high consumption of the peroxide serving as a bleaching agent for hardwood pulp and an often insufficient whiteness of softwood pulp.
The object of the invention is now a process of the type described in DE-A-3'445'132, which retains the advantages of the Acetosolv process in terms of reduced environmental pollution, but which offers improved economy. It has been found that, surprisingly, this object can be achieved not only without loss of environmental protection, but even with a further reduction in the environmental impact by a method having the features specified in claim 1. Preferred embodiments of the method according to the invention have the features specified in claims 2 to 12.
To carry out the digestion stage of the process according to the invention, the customary cellulose-containing raw materials, such as softwoods and hardwoods or annual plants, can be used and prepared in a manner known per se, e.g. be mechanically crushed. Instead of or in addition to acetic acid, the digestion liquid can also contain formic acid and / or propionic acid in such proportions that a total of over 50% by weight and preferably at least 70% by weight, in particular 85 to 98% by weight, of the digestion liquid from a C, s-fatty acid or mixture of such acids with practically any relative proportions of the individual acids.
As a mineral acid, typically used in amounts below 1% by weight in the digestion liquid, e.g. in proportions of 0.05 to 0.5% by weight, other and preferably volatile mineral acids which do not have an oxidizing effect on cellulose can be used instead of or in addition to HCl.
A typical digestion liquid for carrying out the process according to the invention thus consists of 85 to 95% by weight Ci-s fatty acid or mixture (calculated on the anhydrous acid or acids), 0.05 to 0.5% by weight HCl (calculated anhydrous) and water as the remaining portion.
The digestion temperature is usually between 50 C and the boiling point of the digestion liquid under process pressure. It is preferably carried out in such a way that the digestion does not require significantly more than 300 minutes of treatment, which can generally be achieved at temperatures from 100 ° C. to 115 ° C. The digestion stage of the process according to the invention can be carried out practically at normal pressure; Increased pressures can be used, but usually do not bring any advantages that would justify the higher costs of the pressure equipment then required. In general, the digestion is carried out at ambient pressure and generally at pressures not exceeding 1.5 bar; typical preferred digestion temperatures are between 105 and 112 C.
The working conditions of the extraction stage of the process according to the invention are generally chosen so that the kappa value of the pulp obtained by the extraction treatment is below 25. This value is determined in the usual way (see leaflet IV / 37/80 of the Technical Committee for Chemical Pulp and Paper Testing in the Association of Pulp and Paper Chemists and Engineers, BR Germany) and is generally used as a measure of the residual lignin content of pulps.
It was not to be expected that the one previously considered necessary and described in DE-A-3'445'132 bene extraction with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution or organic solvent can be replaced by treatment with C1-3 fatty acid with good success, especially since the advantages of extraction with the acid used for the majority of the digestion liquid are easy to see.
In general, in the extraction stage of the process according to the invention, kappa numbers of under 25 with aqueous C1-3 fatty acid at temperatures in the range from 50 to 110 ° C., preferably between 100 and 105 ° C., practically under normal pressure with an extraction time of typically between 10 and 100 minutes can be reached. As with digestion, increased working pressures are possible, but usually do not offer any particular advantages for extraction either. The water content of the C, -3-fatty acid in the extraction stage is between 5 and 10%, based on the weight of the extraction liquid.
When using hardwood as the raw material, the pulp thus obtained is preferably extracted according to the invention until kappa numbers of not more than 10 are reached.
It is generally essential for the extraction stage according to the invention that the previously digested mass is present in the divided state during the extraction. Conveniently, the pulp obtained by digestion to a mechanical Zerfaserungsbehandlung, for example is subjected with a stirrer or refiner, preferably in the presence of a liquid phase which, in turn, advantageously the C - 3 fatty acid or mixture, which also the preceding digestion and the subsequent extraction treatment has been used or should be used.
Butylacetat.After the extraction treatment, the pulp is usually subjected to a bleaching treatment in the modified manner described in more detail below, using ozone; For the bleaching treatment, the Ci-3 fatty acid already used in the previous steps or / and a liquid medium which displaces it is preferably used in turn, which serves as an entrainer for water in the recovery of the fatty acid by azeotropic distillation, in particular an ester of C 1 - 3 fatty acid with C1-6 alkanol, e.g. butyl acetate.
With or without such a bleaching treatment, the pulp obtained can, if desired, also be freed from the fatty acid or the fatty acid ester without washing with water and this can be recovered in a comparatively environmentally friendly manner.
In the case of digestion and extraction, if appropriate also in a subsequent bleaching treatment, the process is carried out in a countercurrent manner in such a way that the fatty acid flowing from a subsequent processing step is used without special intermediate processing for the preceding process step and is only provided with the additives required in each case. A carousel reactor known per se is particularly preferably used for carrying out the process.
- (A) Aufschluss mit Ci-3-Fettsäure, insbesondere konzentrierte Essigsäure, mit geringen Anteilen flüchtiger Mineralsäure, insbesondere HCI;
- (B) Extraktion mit derselben konzentrierten Fettsäure wie in Schritt (A) nach vorangehender Zerfaserung;
- (C) kombinierte Bleichbehandlung mit Peroxid bzw. Peressigsäure und mit Ozon;
- (A) digestion with Ci-3 fatty acid, in particular concentrated acetic acid, with small amounts of volatile mineral acid, in particular HCl;
- (B) extraction with the same concentrated fatty acid as in step (A) after prior defibration;
- (C) combined bleaching treatment with peroxide or peracetic acid and with ozone;
- (D) Recovery of the C, -3 fatty acid with an organic solvent that forms an azeotrope with water.
The method according to the invention can be carried out practically free of pollutants because it does not produce any waste water and no pollutant-containing flue gases. Since solid inorganic chemicals are not used for digestion or bleaching, as is the case to a large extent with conventional processes, washing with water is not necessary. The digestion chemicals used, preferably acetic acid and hydrochloric acid, can be recovered by evaporation. During bleaching, peracetic acid and ozone break down into acetic acid and oxygen. The lignin, if it is burned to cover the energy requirement, does not result in smoke gases containing S0 2 .
The digestion is preferably carried out continuously or batchwise according to the method described in DE-A-3'445'132. For laboratory tests, a discontinuous digestion by refluxing with five times the amount of 93% acetic acid containing 0.16 to 0.2% HCI is advisable; for technical operation, countercurrent extraction, e.g. with a carousel extractor, preferred because of the lower acetic acid consumption.
The extraction of the digested pulp is expediently carried out with hot aqueous C, -3- fatty acid of the same concentration as is used for the digestion. If a countercurrent extraction is used, the fatty acid can, as already indicated, first be used as an extracting agent and then as a disintegrating agent, without intermediate distillation of the fatty acid, mechanical defibration of the soft-boiled pulp before the extraction is advisable. The chamfer tion can be done in the laboratory by whipping with a strong stirrer in excess acetic acid, whereas on a technical scale a refiner is usually more suitable.
The bleaching treatment can be selected according to the type of wood and the kappa number of the extracted pulp. The use of acetic acid as a medium for pulp bleaching with hydrogen peroxide, which is converted into peracetic acid, has already been described in DE-A-3'445'132. For example, pine pulp with 2% ozone, based on pulp, results in a decrease in the kappa number from 22.5 to 4.2 without the DP value falling significantly. If one starts from pulps with lower kappa numbers, which is possible by suitable extraction with acetic acid, one gets by with smaller amounts of ozone. Subsequent bleaching with 1 to 2% H 2 0 2 in C 1-3 fatty acid or acetic acid or in fatty acid esters, e.g. butyl acetate, enables whiteness of over 80% ISO to be achieved with hardwood pulp, while a third bleaching stage with up to is usually achieved with softwood cellulose 1.5% ozone may be required. The third bleaching stage can also be omitted for softwood pulp if it is assumed that the kappa numbers are very low after the extraction.
Both in the bleaching with hydrogen peroxide and with ozone, high concentrations of the oxidizing agent have proven to be advantageous. In the case of ozone bleaching, it is expedient to start from pulped-up pulp with a high consistency, with a pulp concentration between 20 and 45% by weight, preferably 30 to 40% by weight, while the bleaching with H 2 0 2 in the carousel extractor with a high initial concentration of H 2 0 2 can take place. However, bleaching with low-consistency ozone (5 to 20% by weight pulp in acetic acid) is also possible if a gradient is used for the ozone concentration, for example in a countercurrent process. In the bleaching with H 2 0 2 , butyl acetate or another acetic acid ester, which also forms peracetic acid with hydrogen peroxide, can also be used as the solvent.
The temperature in ozone bleaching can be at room temperature and should not exceed 50 ° C. Lowering the temperature by cooling can also be expedient. The preferred temperature for ozone bleaching is between 10 and 30 C, with a bleaching time of typically between 5 and 100 min, preferably 30 to 60 min. The bleaching temperature when using hydrogen peroxide is between 50 and 100 ° C., preferably between 60 and 80 ° C., with a bleaching time of two to six hours.
After the bleaching treatment, the fatty acid or acetic acid can be removed from the pulp by pressing and subsequent washing with fatty acid ester or butyl acetate and water. Instead of the preferred butyl acetate, other organic solvents which form a low-boiling azeotrope with water can also be used. The removal of the butyl acetate from the pulp can also advantageously be carried out using superheated steam. The butyl acetate then serves as an entrainer for water in the purification of the fatty acid by distillation.
