Abstract

In the system for optical data transmission, in particular by means of infrared radiation, between a fixed station and passing vehicles, an optical device is provided in each case in a fixed transmitting or receiving device (SE1 to SE7), which maps the travelling range onto an image plane which lies between the optical device and the transmitting diodes or receiving diodes. A mask with a predetermined diaphragm aperture is disposed in the aforementioned image plane, where a correspondingly sharply defined effective area (F11, F12, F21, F22, F31, F32) is determined in the travelling range due to the shape of the diaphragm aperture. Information exchange with the transmitting and receiving device (SE) in the fixed station (MS) is possible only while the vehicle or its transmitter or receiver is located within the range of the effective area. Precise allocation of the exchanged information to a specific vehicle is thus enabled. This is important for specific applications, for example for automatic toll charge levying on motorways. <IMAGE>
