With more than 20 million nodes installed, Ethernet is the most popular network, however
is the current transmission speed of only 10 Mb / s for data-intensive processes
such as CAD / CAM, video or multimedia applications have become somewhat slow.
Extensions of the Ethernet network to 100 Mb / s are currently being discussed and
The ANSI commission IEEE 802.3 has various implementation proposals. A
fast network card with 100 Mb / s has already been announced by some companies,
however, no optical solution for data transmission in the Ethernet bus is in sight.
The advantages of optical transmission are widely known. These offer perfectly
new approaches that the conventional copper wire networks in their possible uses
far surpass. These advantages are not only in the transmission speeds,
but also in high interference and eavesdropping security as well as electromagnetic
Immunity that allow the use of such networks even in harsh environments.
While with ring and star networks the solution already exists because of the transmission
an easily configurable one-way system, an open bus system requires one
bidirectional transmission. Similar to FDDI networks, the bidirectional
Solution a duplex transmission ahead with two running in the opposite direction
Data streams. The polymeric fiber currently being developed for video applications,
Multimode connectors and inexpensive mounted LED's are available for data transmission up to
1000 m very suitable and enable use at a low cost even for Ethernet.
Jedoch verlangen beispielsweise Autobahn-
und Umweltüberwachungen Abstände von einigen Kilometern. The purpose of this new network technology is to use the optical networks
lowest technical and financial effort. The usually often 10 to 50 m
Distance between two neighboring stations can also be at 100 Mb / s with electrical
Cables are overcome (twisted pairs) / 2 /. However, for example, motorway
and environmental monitoring distances of a few kilometers.
This invention is an optical module with a duplex arrangement,
which is the bidirectional requirement of the standard and "peer to peer" Ethernet bus system
Fulfills. The small, compact module allows an affordable entry for Ethernet users
into optical transmission technology. Thanks to the universal structure, the
Possibility of optically opting for existing network cards and protocols regardless of manufacturer
retrofit. Thanks to a clever bidirectional transmission, the Ethernet
Network topology unchanged.
Fig. 1 describes the simplest configuration of an optical module that receives data from two directions and also sends bidirectionally. By using two detectors ( 1 ), ( 2 ) the data flow direction ( 7 ), ( 8 ) is recognized and when the data is received the laser ( 3 ) sends in both directions. The data is distributed in both directions by the optical splitter ( 4 ). Points ( 5 ) and ( 6 ) indicate the entry and exit to the terminal. The solution is inexpensive, since usually only one transmitter is required. However, a selective transmission direction is only possible by switching the Y-branch.
Fig. 2 describes an extension of the optical module of Fig. 1. By two transceivers ( 1 ) and ( 4 ), each containing a transmitter and receiver ( 2 ), ( 3 ) and ( 5 ), ( 6 ) one is able to recognize the data flow directions and to send them selectively in the desired direction. A directional decision ( 9 ) in the form of gate logic ensures the selection of the transmission direction. The output ( 10 ) can be used to route the data back and forth to the terminal at the same time. The use of an opto-coupler at the output ( 10 ) enables optical data transfer between the module and the terminal. The main advantage of this extension is that the data processing between the two interfaces is galvanically isolated. In addition, the opto-coupler allows a level adjustment that is adapted to the format of the protocol used.
Fig. 3 describes a version of the optical module that is monolithically integrated on a substrate. With a suitable choice of substrate such as silicon, polymers or semiconductors III-IV, the entire function of the module, including the bypass, can be produced in one component in chip format. The straight waveguide is used to guide the data streams coming from the left and right. When a voltage is applied to the electrode ( 4 ), the data are transferred from the left or right via the directional coupler ( 3 ) to the curved strip waveguide ( 2 ). In the event of a power failure, on the other hand, the data is only routed through the waveguide ( 1 ) (bypass principle). The directional couplers ( 7 ), ( 8 ) transfer the data from the optical fiber ( 2 ) to the detectors ( 9 ) and ( 10 ).
