Abstract
Description
Methods for reducing the odor of polyester resins and their Use The invention relates to a method for reducing the odor of Polyester resins. The invention further relates to the use of those so treated Polyester resins in the manufacture of food packaging.
Polyester resins are widely used in a wide variety of technical applications Areas used. The polyester resins are known to be made by reacting polyvalent Carboxylic acids with polyhydroxyl compounds and optionally other compounds manufactured. During production, undesirable odorous substances are very often formed, which give the polyester resins an unpleasant odor. Particularly annoying and This odor is disadvantageous when the polyester resins are used in fields on which odor pollution should or must be avoided as far as possible. A particular example of this is the production of food packaging. Polyester resins are widely used, for example, for gluing or laminating webs respectively.
Verpacicungsfilmen eingesetzt.Films of various materials for the production of food packaging or packaging films used.
The present invention is based on the object of the undesired Odor of polyester resins to reduce. It has now been found that this task can be solved in a surprisingly simple and effective manner that the Principle of steam distillation to remove unwanted odorous substances is applied to the polyester resins.
The invention accordingly relates to a method for reduction the odor of polyester resins characterized by undesirable by-products is that liquid or molten polyester resins are mixed with water and removing the water with heating under reduced pressure.
According to DE-C 23 18 440, the problem of reducing the odor is said to be be solved by polyester resins that certain components at added to the production of the polyester resin and built into the resin molecules (see especially page 2, lines 46-49).
In the manufacture of polyester resins, water is created through reaction the carboxyl groups are split off with the hydroxyl groups. This water must during the manufacture of polyester resins is known to be subtracted to the equilibrium to shift in favor of polyester formation. Surprisingly, it has now been found that the very unpleasant and undesirable odorous substances produced in this reaction, which remain in the polyester resin despite the removal of the water during polyester formation, can be removed in a simple manner, at least largely, that the Polyester resin treated with water or steam and the water or steam is deducted. So the principle of steam distillation becomes practical Removal of the undesirable odorous substances from the polyester resins applied to these. It is astonishing and unforeseeable that, as already stated, the Removal of the water formed in the manufacture of the polyester resins in the form steam does not remove the odorous substances, appropriate subsequent treatment however, to a practically complete removal of the undesired odorous substances leads.
In addition, that spoke against the use of water or steam this results in a shift in the equilibrium to the detriment of polyester formation, i.e., considerable saponification of the polyester resin formed occurs. It has Surprisingly, it has been shown that if you consider the temperatures used and keeps the treatment times within reasonable limits, the saponification of the polyester resin occurs to such a small extent that its properties are practically not disadvantageous to be influenced.
The polyester resins treated according to the process of the invention can are particularly advantageous for the production of food packaging, and the invention accordingly also relates to the use of those treated in this way Polyester resins in the manufacture of food packaging.
A variety of polyester resins can be used according to the method of Invention successful to remove undesirable odorous substances acts will. The method of the invention can be particularly useful for treating Saturated polyester resins are used because the removal of undesirable This is why odorous substances from unsaturated polyester resins are often not very large Brings progress, because this is usually done with monomers that themselves have a strong smell, mixed and then cured.
-anhydrid, etc.The polyester resins which can be treated according to the invention are in great variety Extent known. Suitable starting products for their production are, for example: Carboxylic acids: phthalic acid and its anhydride, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, trimellitic acid and anhydride, adipic acid, sebacic acid, azelaic acid, maleic acid and anhydride, Etc.
Hydroxylverbindungen: Ethandiol, Propandiole, Butandiole, Hexandiole, 2,2-Dimethylpropan-l,3-diol, Diethylenglykol, Dipropylenglykol, l,l,l-Trimethylpropan, Glycerin, Pentaerythrit, etc.Hydroxyl compounds: ethanediol, propanediols, butanediols, hexanediols, 2,2-dimethylpropane-l, 3-diol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, l, l, l-trimethylpropane, Glycerine, pentaerythritol, etc.
The process can be carried out in such a way that water vapor introduced into the liquid, optionally molten polyester resin and again is removed, i.e. that a conventional steam distillation is carried out. This method often requires a relatively large technical effort is not available in the production facilities for polyester resin production and therefore should be avoided. The method according to the invention can be carried out in a simpler manner Way can also be carried out in such a way that the polyester resin is mixed with water and the water is removed again with heating under reduced pressure. According to of the invention is understood by the term "under heating" that the mixture from polyester resins and water in any case above room temperature, at least above 25 ° C is present. "Applied temperature" is the temperature of the mixture mentioned Understood. Duration of treatment, temperatures and pressures used are coordinated in such a way that a unwanted change the properties of the polyester resin, especially undesirable hydrolysis is avoided, on the other hand the process but in an economical and technical way is closed within a reasonable time. In general, for this reason, the temperature in removing the water above about 500C, preferably above about 700C and especially preferably above about 100 "C. The upper limit of the temperature is determined by that, as already mentioned, an undesired change in properties is avoided will. The upper limit therefore depends on the stability of the polyester resins. in the in general, temperatures of more than 2000C, preferably more than 1800C, be avoided at least over longer periods of time.
The reduced amount used to remove the water or water vapor Pressure should, as already mentioned, be so low that within economical and for a technically reasonable period of time the water is withdrawn. This is done in the Usually reached when the pressure is below about 200 mbar, expediently below about 100 mbar and preferably below about 50 mbar. The lower the pressure, the more the water can be removed faster. This is the crucial criterion.
The water must be completely removed from the polyester resin, as required due to the subsequent use of the polyester resin is. If, for example, the polyester resins are used as a laminating adhesive and at the same time mixed with polyisocyanates is an extremely extensive distance of the water required, e.g. to an amount of water of less than about 0.5% by weight, preferably less than 0.1% by weight. This is known to the person skilled in the art. If a minor The water content does not interfere with the further processing of the polyester resins he of course remain in it.
The amount of water used to reduce the odor caused by undesired By-products used depends on the type of polyester resin and the type and amount of odorous substances present.
If the odor is only minor, it is usually sufficient small amounts of water. If the polyester resins, on the other hand, have a very strong undesirable If there is an odor caused by by-products, larger quantities must be used. In In some cases, an amount of water of more than 1% by weight, based on the polyester resin. Appropriate are usually more than 5 Ges.% Water, based on the polyester resin used. The upper limit is, apart from the above considerations, determined by economic considerations. It is of course not advisable to add excessive or unnecessary amounts of water, which then have to be removed again. The upper limit is therefore around 50 Total, expediently less than about 20 percent by weight and particularly preferably less than about 15 total, based on the weight of the polyester resin used.
