Abstract

The inflatable cushion for an airbag system for a car has two separate chambers (2,3) made by a seam (4) across a large airbag. The air is passed into the first chamber via an inlet (5). After reaching a set pressure the seam splits and admits air to the second chamber from which it is vented through an array of holes. The two stage cushion provides a progressive protection, with a rapid filling of the first section for immediate protection and additional cover when the second stage is inflated. The inflation is powered by a multi-stage pyrolytic gas generator.

Description

'lAufblasbares Aufprallschutzkissen"'lInflatable Impact Protection Cushion "

The invention relates to an inflatable impact protection cushion for Occupants of a motor vehicle, in the event of an accident, depending on the strength of the deceleration through several consecutively triggerable ignition stages with the one available Gas can be filled with increasing pressure, with part of the protective cushion in the initial state is separated by a seam or the like and this seam is separated by the increasing pressure Od. Like. Is destroyed, so that in the final state the entire volume of the protective cushion is available according to patent (patent application P 27 22 551.o).

The present invention was based on the object of such a thing Further develop impact protection cushions so that both levels can be safely filled without Loss of time and with the smallest possible amount of gas is possible.

Dics is achieved according to the invention in that all necessary Outflow openings arranged in the originally separated part of the impact protection cushion are.

With the proposal according to the invention, there is a loss of gas over time between filling the first and second stages of the impact protection cushion avoided.

The object of the invention is to be based on one in the Drawings shown Ausführungsbei play closer to be explained.

In the drawing, Fig. 1 shows a rear view of an inventive Impact protection cushion, FIG. 2 shows a side view of the impact protection cushion Completion of the first filling phase, and FIG. 3 shows the impact protection cushion according to FIG. 2 in completely filled condition The impact protection cushion shown in the drawing 1 is intended for attachment to the passenger side of a motor vehicle and approximately designed pillow-shaped.

It has two chambers 2 and 3. which in the initial state by a Seam 4 are separated from each other. In the event of an accident, the The first stage of a gas generator is activated and, via a gas inlet 5, first the Chamber 2 of the impact protection cushion 1 filled. Depending on the severity of the accident can then, if necessary, a second stage with a certain time delay of the gas generator are ignited, causing such a sharp rise in pressure in the chamber 2 causes the seam 4 to be destroyed, so that now the sent Volume of chambers 2 and 3 is available. To during the first phase the To keep gas loss as low as possible, all necessary gas outflow openings are 6 arranged in chamber 3, so that chamber 2 is filled during the first phase , Seam! T intact - gas loss occurs.
