Abstract

One or more wind driven turbines (8) are set above the ship with v vertical axes. The turbine blades are shaped to run tangentially at the edges and catch the wind from any quarter. Circular plates (10, 12) at the top and bottom contain the wind effect and the turbine shaft drives a reduction gearing coupled to the screw (30). A clutch control can be fitted to disengage the turbine and couple in an electric motor (34). Alternatively the turbine drives a generator (36) to charge batteries. The system enables the ship to be wind propelled while requiring only a small crew. When not under way the turbines recharge the batteries and power any auxiliary equipment.
