Description
The invention relates to a security element for a document of value, for example for a bank note or a passport, the security element having a substrate with a front side and a rear side, with a viewer viewing the substrate of the security element from the front side, that is, in plan view.
Generic security elements, such as security threads for passport papers, are produced in the prior art as so-called country code threads with a flag and a negative or positive text in gravure printing, UV offset or digital printing on a plastic substrate. In addition, these security threads can be equipped with fluorescence. The same printing color with the same properties is used for the text (negative or positive text).
As further generic security elements, for example security films are known which are applied to the surface of the substrate of a bank note. In the case of the second-generation euro banknotes, such security films extend from the upper edge to the lower edge of the banknotes and cover a hole in the banknotes. In the case of the first generation euro banknotes, nominations of € 50 and more have a security film in the form of a single element, a so-called film patch.
Further generic security elements are, for example, security threads with optical properties, such as, for example, holograms or liquid crystal colors, metallizations with or without color-shifting effects and / or cambering-tilting effects, as well as security threads with magnetic properties.
The invention is therefore based on the object of developing a generic security element in such a way that the disadvantages of the prior art are eliminated and the protection against counterfeiting is further increased.
This object is achieved by the features of the independent claim. Developments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
According to the invention, a first printing ink is arranged on the substrate of the security element, which is translucent or preferably transparent in the infrared wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation and is opaque in the visible wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation and has a dark or black shade per se. In the viewing direction between the viewer and the first printing ink, a second printing ink is arranged, which is also translucent or preferably transparent in the infrared wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation and is translucent in the visible wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation and has a white or whitish-silver hue. For the viewer, the first and the second printing inks are arranged one above the other in at least one overlapping area, so that for the viewer there is an overall silver hue in the at least one overlapping area in the visible wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation. The first printing ink is thus located in the overlapping area behind the second printing ink in the viewing direction and results from the interaction of the two printing inks for the viewer in the visible wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation or visually an overall silver hue in the overlapping area.
The wording that the first or second printing ink “per se” has a dark or black or white color tone means, within the meaning of this invention, that the respective printing ink taken by itself, that is, without interaction with another printing ink, this color tone having. If only the first or second printing ink were arranged on the substrate, the first or second printing ink would have this color tone.
According to the invention, two printing inks transparent to IR radiation are combined with one another, the first printing ink being opaque and the second printing ink translucent in the visually visible wavelength range, and the second printing ink with the white shade being applied over the dark or black first printing ink in the viewing direction. The combination of the two printing inks gives the viewer an overall silver hue in the overlapping area.
According to a first embodiment, the first printing ink can be arranged on the front side of the substrate of the security element and the second color can be arranged above the first printing ink. In this case, both printing inks are arranged on the front side of the substrate of the security element.
According to an alternative embodiment, the substrate of the security element is translucent or preferably transparent, at least in partial areas of the visible and infrared wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation, the first printing ink being arranged on the rear side of the substrate of the security element and the second color being arranged on the front side of the substrate of the security element is. The first printing ink is visible and recognizable from the front side of the substrate through the translucent or preferably transparent substrate.
According to a further alternative embodiment, the substrate of the security element is translucent or preferably transparent, at least in partial areas of the visible and infrared wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation, the first printing ink being arranged on the back of the substrate of the security element and the second color between the first color and the substrate of the security element is arranged. The first and the second printing inks are visible and recognizable from the front side of the substrate through the translucent or preferably transparent substrate.
The first printing ink is particularly preferably applied with an application rate of approximately 1 g / m 2 to approximately 3 g / m 2 and the second printing ink with an application rate of approximately 2 g / m 2 to approximately 8 g / m 2 . The rule here is that the greater the amount applied and thus the layer thickness of the second printing ink that is selected, the brighter the security element appears in the visually visible wavelength range. Conversely, the lower the amount applied and thus the layer thickness of the second printing ink that is selected, the darker the security element appears in the visually visible wavelength range. With an application amount of the second printing ink of approximately 2 g / m 2 , the security element thus appears darker than with an application amount of the second printing ink of approximately 8 g / m 2 .
The first printing ink is, for example, the printing ink EP-92988 IR black from the Swiss company ROTOFLEX. It has the following properties: good hiding power with a sufficiently thick layer in the visible range (VIS), transparent in the IR range for wavelengths from 800 nm to 1000 nm, very good adhesion and good lamination adhesion, suitable for frontal and reverse printing, suitable for external printing together with a waterproof protective varnish, low residual solvents, the main binders are cellulose nitrate and polyurethane, does not contain any chlorine-containing binders such as PVC or PVdC. In the visible wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation, this printing ink appears in top view, ie when illuminated from the front and viewed from the front, inherently dark to black and in transparency, ie when illuminated from the rear and viewed from the front, dark green in itself and with a larger order quantity black.
The second printing ink is, for example, the printing ink EP-92088 IR lacquer from the Swiss company ROTOFLEX. It has the following properties: Silver gloss effect with a high layer thickness thanks to special pigments, permeable in the IR range for wavelengths from 800 nm to 1000 nm, very good adhesion and good lamination adhesion, suitable for front and back printing, suitable for external printing together with a waterproof protective varnish, low residual solvents, main binders are cellulose nitrate and polyurethane, does not contain any chlorine-containing binders such as PVC or PVdC. In the visible wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation, this printing ink appears white or shimmering white-silver when viewed from above and when viewed through.
In the infrared wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation, both printing inks are translucent or preferably transparent, so that the elements arranged between or behind the two printing inks can be recognized when illuminated with IR radiation. When illuminated with visible radiation, on the other hand, the substrate and the elements are not visible to a viewer and are therefore hidden. The elements can be designed, for example, in the form of a text, character, pattern or coding. These elements r can also represent information for IR sensors, which are common, for example, in bank note processing machines. In addition, a combination of printed elements with printed machine-readable elements, such as magnetic properties, is possible, which are covered by one or both printing inks and only become recognizable under IR observation.
Of course, the first and / or second printing color can also be designed in the form of a text, character, pattern or coding and, when illuminated with visible radiation, represent information for the viewer.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the first and second printing inks are translucent or preferably transparent in the wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation from 800 nm to 1000 nm.
According to a further advantageous embodiment, the substrate of the security element is a plastic film and consists, for example, of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The security element is then subsequently applied to the surface of a document of value or at least partially in introduced the substrate of the document of value. Alternatively, the document of value can have a substrate and the substrate of the security element is the substrate of the document of value. In this case, the security element does not have a substrate of its own, but rather the first and / or second printing ink is applied to the substrate of the document of value.
The first and / or second printing ink is particularly preferably a solvent-based, water-based or UV-curable printing ink or toner which is printed onto the substrate of the security element by gravure printing, digital printing, UV offset printing, screen printing, inkjet printing or flexographic printing.
A particular advantage of the invention is an additional detection of the authenticity of a document of value, for example a passport paper, by illuminating the printing inks with electromagnetic radiation in the infrared wavelength range. These are hidden security features, so-called
The protection against forgery can be further increased by combining
In addition, the first and second printing inks used according to the invention, which have, for example, poor resistance to solvents, acids, alkalis and / or bleaches, increase the security against manipulation as a supplement to the chemical protection of the substrate or paper.
The texts, patterns, characters, codes or other elements applied to the substrate can also consist of an IR-translucent or IR-transparent and IR-absorbing printing ink, which, when arranged next to one another, result in a different pattern when illuminated with electromagnetic radiation in the infrared wavelength range.
The IR translucent or transparent printing inks can also have fluorescent properties. When illuminated with visible electromagnetic radiation, the printing inks are visible, while when illuminated with electromagnetic radiation in the infrared wavelength range they cannot be recognized and fluoresce when illuminated with electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet wavelength range. The IR-translucent or -transparent printing inks can also have a different hue under UV light, so that when illuminated with visible electromagnetic radiation a pattern can be recognized, for example a star, which when illuminated with UV light a pattern of two or more fluorescent ones Colors becomes recognizable.
According to a further embodiment, the second printing ink can also be colored with other dyes, so that an overall golden hue is obtained, for example, by adding a yellow dye.
Documents of value for which a security element according to the invention can be used are, in particular, banknotes, stocks, bonds, certificates, vouchers, checks, high-quality entry tickets, but also other papers at risk of forgery, such as passports and other identification documents, as well as cards such as credit or debit cards, and also product security elements such as labels, seals, packaging, folding boxes, package inserts and the like.
The simplified designation of value document includes all of the above materials, documents and product security means.
Information in the sense of this invention is a pattern designed and visually perceptible or machine-readable representation. This can, for example, form an alphanumeric string of digits and / or letters, a graphic image, an image, a text or other characters, for example in the form of a code. The information particularly preferably consists of positive and / or negative motifs. In the case of a positive motif, a motif element itself is applied to the substrate, whereas in the case of a negative motif, the area surrounding the motif element is applied to the substrate. A positive one The motif is, for example, a letter printed in dark color on the light-colored substrate. A negative motif is, for example, an area which is applied to the light-colored substrate in a dark color and which has an unprinted area in the form of a letter within the area.
In the context of this invention, translucency means that an object, such as the substrate or the printing inks, allows a certain proportion of incident electromagnetic radiation of the respective wavelength to pass through. If electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength range hits one side of the object, a certain proportion of this electromagnetic radiation is allowed through to the other side of the object and exits there again. The greater the percentage of the passing electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength range in relation to the incident electromagnetic radiation of this wavelength range, the more translucent the object is for this wavelength range. If the percentage is at least 90%, i.e. if the object allows the electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength range to pass through it with almost no weakening, the object is said to be transparent for this wavelength range. On the other hand, an object that allows less than 10% and preferably about 0% of the incident electromagnetic radiation to pass through, ie in which the proportion of the electromagnetic radiation passing through is low or close to or equal to zero in relation to the incident electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength range, is considered to be opaque or designated as not permeable to electromagnetic radiation of this wavelength range.
The terms “front side” or “back side” of the substrate or value document are relative terms which can also be referred to as “one” and “the opposite” side and which form the majority of the total surface of the substrate or value document.
