Description
The invention relates to a method for data transmission in a satellite network and a terrestrial network. Currently, much research is being invested in the use of so-called millimeter waves for the next generation of terrestrial networks. This interest is due to the availability of a large frequency spectrum and the ability to significantly reduce cell size. Furthermore, the required antenna sizes can be reduced and antenna arrays can be used by which the performance of mobile communication systems can be significantly increased.
Furthermore, possibilities for the use of satellites in terrestrial communication scenarios are investigated in the prior art. Satellite systems offer the advantage of enabling global signal coverage and connectivity. There are publications suggesting to use satellite frequencies in terrestrial communication as long as the degree of interference at the satellite is kept low. However, there remains a residual interference, so that these technologies are not widely recognized.

The method proposed in
Publication 3 examines a minimum required spacing in the frequencies used so that an acceptable level of satellite interference can be achieved. The method illustrated in Publication 4 uses beamforming techniques at the base stations so that the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) value can be maximized at the terrestrial terminals.
Publication 5 also examines the simultaneous use of terrestrial communications and satellite communications in a common area.
The publications described above investigate the use of the satellite Ka band over terrestrial communication so that the envisaged interference requirements (publications 6 to 9) can be achieved.
A disadvantage of the known methods is that only terrestrial communication benefits from them, but not satellite communications. Furthermore, an increase in interference must be accepted on the satellite side.
The object of the invention is to provide a method for data transmission in a satellite network and a terrestrial network, by which the above-mentioned disadvantages could be avoided.
The object is achieved according to the invention by the features of
Terrestrische Basisstationen übertragen Daten an terrestrische Terminals. In the method according to the invention, data is transmitted in a satellite network and a terrestrial network. A satellite transmits data to satellite terminals. Terrestrial base stations transmit data to terrestrial terminals. The satellite network and the terrestrial network at least partially cover the same geographical area. Satellite terminals can also exchange data with the terrestrial base stations.
In the event of weather-related shadowing of the
- if the weather disturbance intensity is less than a first threshold Th 1a : directly transmitting the data from the satellite terminals (18) to the satellite (14),
- where TH 1a corresponds to the maximum permissible weather disturbance intensity, so that the signal arriving at the satellite terminals (18) still has a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio,
- wherein at a weather disturbance intensity greater than TH 2a, data is transmitted from the satellite terminals (18) to a second terrestrial base station (16b) located in an area where the weather disturbance intensity is less than TH 1a ,
- this terrestrial base station (16b) transmits this data to the satellite (14),
- where TH 2a is the minimum required weather disturbance intensity for the signals arriving at the satellite (14) to generate a mutual interference that is below a certain threshold I SAT . The value I SAT is in this case the same in all embodiments of the method according to the invention and designates that interference value at the satellite which is still acceptable, so that the signals arriving at the satellite are still distinguishable and can thus be utilized,
- wherein data which the satellite desires to transmit in forward link to a satellite terminal (18) in an area where the weather interference intensity is greater than TH 2b is sent from the satellite (14) to a terrestrial base station (16b) located in an area where the weather disturbance intensity is smaller than TH 1b ,
- this terrestrial base station (16b) transmits this data directly or indirectly to the satellite terminal (18) using a frequency in the satellite bandwidth or in the terrestrial bandwidth.
- where TH 2b is the minimum required weather disturbance intensity, so that the interference of the signals received by the terrestrial terminals (20) and the satellite terminals (18) in the respective area from the satellite (14) is less than a defined threshold,
- wherein in the forward link at a weather disturbance intensity less than TH 1b, data is transmitted directly from the satellite (14) to the satellite terminals (18),
- where TH 1b corresponds to the maximum permissible weather disturbance intensity, so that the signal arriving at the satellite (14) still has a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio.
The weather-related shadowing of the signal can be caused, for example, by rain, snow, fog or other occurrences. The weather disturbance intensity can thus be, for example, rain intensity, snow intensity, etc. The weather-related attenuation of the signal may thus be any atmospheric event capable of attenuating the electromagnetic signal at the frequencies used for a sufficiently long time, so that a communication channel can be established during this time and at least some data can be transmitted.
It is preferred that at a weather disturbance intensity greater than TH 2a, data be transmitted from the satellite terminals to a terrestrial base station covering the area in which the satellite terminal is located. This transmission can be done using frequencies in the satellite bandwidth or in the terrestrial bandwidth. This terrestrial base station transmits this data to a second terrestrial base station located in an area where the weather disturbance intensity is less than TH 1a . This second terrestrial base station then transmits this data to the satellite.
Furthermore, it is preferable that data which the satellite wants to transmit in the forward link to a satellite terminal in an area where the weather disturbance intensity is larger than TH 2b is sent from the satellite to a second terrestrial base station located in an area, where the weather disturbance intensity is less than TH 1b . This second terrestrial base station transmits this data to a first terrestrial base station located in the area where the weather disturbance intensity is greater than TH 2b . This first terrestrial base station transmits this data to the satellite terminal using a frequency in the satellite bandwidth or in the terrestrial bandwidth.
In an alternative embodiment, the method according to the invention may have the following features: Here, too, data transmission takes place in a satellite network and a terrestrial network.
Ein Satellit überträgt Daten an Satellitenterminals. Terrestrische Basisstationen übertragen Daten an terrestrische Terminals. A satellite transmits data to satellite terminals. Terrestrial base stations transmit data to terrestrial terminals. The satellite network and the terrestrial network at least partially cover the same geographical area. Satellite terminals can also exchange data with the terrestrial base stations.
In the event of weather-related shadowing of the
In this alternative embodiment, a threshold TH 2 is defined. This indicates the minimum required weather interference intensity, so that the signals arriving at the satellite generate a mutual interference that is below a certain threshold I SAT . At a weather disturbance intensity greater than TH 2 , frequencies commonly used for communication between the satellite and the satellite terminals in the area in question are used for terrestrial communication between the terrestrial base stations and the terrestrial terminals.
Thus, according to the invention, the attenuation of the signal to or from the satellite caused by rain or other weather events is used to reduce the interference which would occur without the weather-related attenuation of the signal at the satellite or at the terminals such that it reaches a certain threshold (Th 2a or Th 2b ). Thus, it is possible to use frequencies that can usually be used exclusively in satellite communications also in terrestrial communication, since they would not cause any appreciable interference, for example due to the weather-related attenuation at the satellite. For this purpose, it is checked according to the invention whether the weather disturbance intensity exceeds this threshold value Th 2 , so that the frequencies mentioned are used for terrestrial communication only in this case. If the threshold is not exceeded, these frequencies can not be used for terrestrial communication.
In the first embodiment of the method according to the invention, it is possible despite the weather-related attenuation of the signal to provide an alternative transmission path from or to the satellite, so that despite the bad weather, a communication from or to the satellite is possible.
In contrast to the method according to the invention, methods for transmitting data from or to a satellite according to the prior art suffer from a strong signal attenuation in heavy rainfall. When high frequencies (e.g., in the millimeter wave range) are used, the raindrops have a similar magnitude to the wavelength of the signal. This causes a loss of electromagnetic energy. The attenuation of the signal (which is usually measured in decibels per kilometer) due to the rain is particularly serious for frequencies greater than 10 GHz, especially if the length of the signal path affected by rain is greater than 1 km. In the worst case, the communication link can fail completely. The methods known from the prior art include the likelihood of a signal attenuation due to a heavy rainfall in the planning of the connection channel as a safety buffer and accept a remaining residual probability for a complete failure of the transmission channel. These disadvantages can be avoided by the method according to the invention.
For example, it can be assumed that the frequency band used by the satellite lies between the frequencies f 1SAT and f 2SAT , where f 1SAT <f 2SAT. The bandwidth commonly used by the satellite is thus defined as B sat = f 2 SAT - f 1 SAT . Typically, the terrestrial base stations will require only a portion of the bandwidth B SAT to provide substitute communication to the satellite terminals according to the first alternative of the method of the invention to replace a weather related satellite communication link failure. The remaining part of the bandwidth B SAT can thus be used for the terrestrial communication between the terrestrial base stations and the terrestrial terminals, without this affecting the satellite communication.
The second embodiment of the method according to the invention can also be used if no satellite terminal transmits or receives data from the satellite in the relevant area. In this case, it is nevertheless possible to use the bandwidth B SAT normally used for satellite communication for terrestrial communication. This takes place when the weather disturbance intensity exceeds the limit value TH 2a , which means that the signal power arriving at the satellite within the satellite bandwidth in the area concerned is below I SAT . The actual interference arriving at the satellite can be estimated and must be below the value I SAT so that the bandwidth B SAT normally used for satellite communication can be used for terrestrial communication. For example, this estimate of the interference actually arriving at the satellite could assume a worst case where the interference caused by the satellite's terrestrial network is at a maximum. This will look at the total number of terrestrial users plus any terrestrial base stations that are using satellite uplink frequencies at the same time. This is based on a maximum possible transmission power. In addition, the weather-related attenuation of the signal is taken into account. If this estimated value for the interference is below the maximum permitted interference value I SAT , the bandwidth B SAT usually used for satellite communication can be used for the terrestrial communication.
In this embodiment of the method as well, the weather-related attenuation of the signal is thus used to keep the interference at the satellite so low that the sequences which are usually used for satellite communication can be used in the relevant area for terrestrial communication.
It is preferred that the communication from and to the satellite take place in the millimeter wave range. A rain-induced attenuation of signals can be assumed, for example, for frequencies above 10 GHz for distances> 1 km. Significant signal attenuation may occur at longer distances or greater weather disturbance intensity even at lower frequencies.
It is further preferred that the satellite terminals exchange data with the terrestrial base stations via a terrestrial data transmission method. Alternatively, it is possible for this data exchange to take place by the terrestrial base stations emulating a transmission method commonly used for data communication between the satellites and the satellite terminals. The satellite terminals can thus use the same RF front-end for terrestrial band and satellite band communication, as long as the two bands are close together. Alternatively, two RF Frontends are used, but some can overlap, if the two bands are too far apart.
It is further preferred that the terrestrial base stations determine the weather interference intensity by measuring the signal received from the satellite. It is further preferred that both the satellite, the satellite terminals, the terrestrial base stations and the terrestrial terminals know the attenuation caused by the rain as well as the weather disturbance intensity itself.
Furthermore, it is preferred that the satellite, the satellite terminals, the terrestrial base stations and / or the terrestrial terminals have knowledge of the limit values Th 1a and Th 2a or Th 1b and Th 2b .
In a further preferred embodiment, in communication in the forward link, the first terrestrial base station which has received the redirected data from the second terrestrial base station located outside the rain affected area decides whether to use the data to the satellite terminal a frequency in the satellite bandwidth or in the terrestrial bandwidth.
It is common to all embodiments of the method according to the invention that the satellite can use its satellite bandwidth B SAT as usual, so that it is not necessary to take measures outside the area affected by the rain to avoid interference in the area affected by the rain. This is already done by the rain itself.
To understand the method of the invention, it is further important to note that, if the bandwidth commonly used for satellite communication was also used for terrestrial communication, if the weather interference intensity is less than TH 2 , the terrestrial terminals will still receive satellite signals in this case would, which would cause interference. Therefore, it is important to use the bandwidth B SAT usually used for satellite communication only for terrestrial communication when the weather disturbance intensity is greater than TH 2 .

According to the statistical model proposed in the ITU-R Recommendations according to Publication 11 to 18, maps of actual rains were compiled, which were correlated by space and time. This means that a satellite terminal will experience different weather-related attenuations depending on its location. Furthermore, the weather-related mitigation will be time-dependent.
In
In contrast, users U 3 and U 4 experience strong weather-related signal attenuation, so that their data transmission will not reach the required signal-to-noise ratio. In this case, these users will communicate with the terrestrial network and the transmission to the satellite will be in another geographical area with the interposition of a terrestrial base station. In the rain areas where users U 3 and U 4 are located, the terrestrial network will use the satellite bandwidth B SAT for terrestrial communication.
Thus, the communication between the satellite terminals and the satellite is only interrupted by the method according to the invention when the weather interference intensity is between Th 1 and Th 2 . These limits must be calculated depending on the requirements of the system and depend on the frequency and position of the satellite terminal.
Assuming that satellite users exist in an area with the radius R n SAT , and n terrestrants n SAT << n terr . If the weather disturbance intensity is above Th 2 , the satellite terminals can not communicate directly with the satellite. Assuming that the total bandwidth required by the n SAT terminals is B SAT , x% <B SAT , where x% is the percentage of satellite bandwidth, the terrestrial network gains an additional bandwidth of B SAT , 100 -% - x% for its own terrestrial terminals. For example, if B SAT = 5MHz and there is a user U 4 in the rain area that requires B SAT , 20% = 1MHz, then the bandwidth that can be used by the terrestrial network is B SAT , 80% = 4MHz. The method according to the invention thus offers great advantages for geographical areas which are frequently affected by heavy rainfall.
