Description
The invention relates to an orientation aid for persons with limited vision, comprising a sensor system with at least one distance sensor to detect obstacles in the surroundings, and at least one signal device connected or connectable to the distance sensor for generating a haptic detectable signal in the case that the distance sensor an obstacle detected, and a fastening means to attach the sensor to an arm, a leg, the trunk or the head of the person, wherein the distance sensor and the signal device are provided in pairs locally adjacent to the fastening means, so that the signaling device by a the person generates haptic detectable signal at the location on the body of the person to which the distance sensor is provided.
Persons with limited eyesight can resort to suitable aids to compensate for the restriction or absence of their visual sense. In doing so, they are generally enabled by the aid to grasp objects, in particular obstacles, that are in their surroundings in order to support the orientation process and to increase the safety during locomotion.
One way to help people with low vision to orient themselves in their environment is through guide dogs trained specifically for this purpose. The guide dog gets acoustic commands from the person, such as directions, which he follows, thus navigating the person through their surroundings. The guide dog carries a special harness, which he is connected to the person's hand. Although a well-trained guide dog allows the person with impaired vision a comparatively high degree of freedom of movement and safety, there are also disadvantages with this orientation assistance. The purchase of a guide dog involves high costs and the animal needs attention and care, for which time must be applied. In Germany, only about 1 to 2% of persons with severely impaired vision have such a guide dog.
Another remedy is the classic cane that the person with impaired eyesight holds in their hands and with which they can feel their surroundings. Such canes can be equipped with sensors, with the help of which beyond the mere mechanical sensing process an electronically assisted examination of the environment takes place. For example, ultrasonic sensors or laser sensors may be provided to the blind stick, which detect obstacles and transmit a signal via the handle to the person holding the cane. A disadvantage of this type of orientation aid is that generally only a selective sampling of the environment takes place and no information about the direction is transmitted. Furthermore, the person must hold the cane with one hand, which restricts their freedom of movement and the stick must be swiveled to scan the surroundings for obstacles.
The known systems have proven themselves for the detection and reporting of obstacles, but efforts are being made to decisively expand the functionality of these systems.
Based on this prior art, it is an object of the present invention to provide an orientation aid for persons with limited vision of the type mentioned, which allows an increased ease of use.
This object is achieved in that the distance sensor and the signal device are configured such that a minimum distance value is set or can be, and the signal device generates only a haptic detectable signal when obstacles are detected in the environment by the distance sensor farther away than this minimum distance value.
Accordingly, the invention is based on the idea of suppressing the signaling in a detection area which extends directly around the user by entering a minimum distance value. Thus, in particular, it is possible to prevent the person's own extremities from being unintentionally reported after detection, and to prevent irritation of the user when he is present assisted by the orientation aid in his environment. This blanking may also be advantageous indoors, when a large number of objects are in the immediate vicinity of the user and their positions may already be known to him.
In addition, it may be provided that the distance sensor and the signal device are configured such that a maximum distance value is or can be set, and the signal device generates only a haptic detectable signal when the distance sensor detects obstacles in the environment, the closer lie as this maximum distance value.
This configuration makes it possible to individually adapt the area around the user in which the obstacles detected by the signaling device are reported to the respective present environmental situation. If the person is, for example, in an interior, especially obstacles that are within a distance of a few tens of centimeters to a few meters away from the person must be recorded and reported. Accordingly, the minimum and maximum distance values are set by the user. If the person goes for a walk, however, obstacles in their immediate vicinity play a lesser role, and obstacles must be detected several meters away. For this environment situation, the area in which obstacles are to be reported is selected accordingly. In particular, in the vicinity of a road, it may be necessary that a comparatively high maximum distance value is set, so that early vehicles are detected by the distance sensors, which could endanger the person with impaired eyesight.
In addition, the targeted setting of the area in which obstacles are detected and reported enables the user to better resolve the distance of a detected obstacle, which is transmitted via the haptic perceptible signal. This is the case when the area in which obstacles are reported is comparatively small, such as when staying in rooms, where it amounts to about three to five meters, depending on the size of the room.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, a memory device is provided on the orientation aid in which a plurality of pairs of minimum and maximum distance values are stored. The pairs of distance values in the form of user-selectable profiles, in particular at least one profile for the use of the orientation aid indoors and / or at least one profile for the use of the orientation aid outdoors, can be stored in the memory device.
This ensures that on the one hand the user can individually adjust the orientation aid to his needs and, on the other hand, flexibly and quickly adapt to different environmental situations in everyday life. It is advantageous, for example, if a profile of distance values adapted to the person's own home and a profile for their way to work are stored in the memory device. For example, when the person leaves their home in the morning, he or she can switch from the stored profile for the home to the saved work-travel profile by simply pressing a button. This can also be done automatically. For this purpose, currently acquired distance values are compared with the distance values stored in the profiles, and the profile is automatically selected in which the distance values suitable for the current environmental situation are stored.
In a further exemplary embodiment of the present invention, it is provided that the size of a solid angle, in which obstacles are detected, can be set on the distance sensor of the sensor system. This possibility of variation ensures that the orientation aid can be adapted even more precisely to the requirements of individual environmental situations.
It can be provided that the distance sensor of the sensor system is an ultrasonic sensor, a laser scanner or a time-of-flight camera. These types of sensors are particularly suitable for detecting obstacles in a contactless manner.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the signaling device is designed to generate time-varying haptic detectable signals, in particular pulse signals with varying intensity, varying pulse duration and varying pulse spacing and / or warning signals. Thus, different waveforms are available and the person can be transmitted a wide range of information. For example, a pulsed signal can occur, the pulse distance being the lower the closer an object is to the person. By means of signals of varying intensity, the person can be further communicated the distance of the obstacle, or it can be an indication of its size.
Alternatively or additionally, according to the present invention, the sensor system may be designed to provide, in addition to the distance of a detected obstacle, at least one further obstacle property, in particular the temperature and / or the temperature Determine speed of the obstacle, and the signal device may be designed to generate corresponding to the properties determined haptic detectable signals and / or warning signals. It can be provided that the signal device is designed to generate time-varying haptic detectable signals and to convey information about different detected by means of sensors obstacle properties to the person with impaired vision, wherein different the temporally varying haptic detectable signal characterizing variables different obstacle properties assigned. Moreover, it is particularly advantageous if the signal device is designed to generate the time-varying haptic detectable signals as pulse signals with varying intensity, varying pulse duration and pulse spacing and / or warning signals and to convey information about the different obstacle characteristics to the person Obstacle properties in each case at least one characterizing the pulse signal size, in particular the intensity, the pulse duration, the pulse interval or a warning signal is assigned.
This embodiment ensures that the person receives information about further obstacle properties, in addition to the mere message that an obstacle is located at a specific position at a certain distance from her, such as, for example, the temperature thereof. For this purpose, a temperature sensor or a thermal imaging camera can be provided. For example, it allows the user to distinguish whether a person or an object is in his or her vicinity. Information about the speed of an approaching object can also be determined and passed on to the user. For example, if a bicycle or car is approaching at high speed, and this is signaled by the guidance, the person may be able to change their position in good time and avoid it. In addition, information about the size of detected obstacles can be transmitted.
The transmission of the additional information to the person takes place while taking advantage of the possible variations of the signal structure of the haptic detectable signal and using further warning signals. For example, the temperature of an object may be represented by the intensity of the pulse signal while its velocity is communicated across the pulse spacing. In dangerous situations, for example, when approaching an obstacle at high speed, an example audible warning signal can be issued in addition. It is also possible that the user is informed about a low battery level of the device by an audible warning signal.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, it can be provided that the sensor system comprises a plurality of pairs of distance sensors and signal devices assigned to one another and, moreover, the distance sensors for data exchange are connected to each other and synchronized or can be. This ensures that the environment can be extensively scanned for obstacles without having to swivel the orientation guide for that purpose. If the person with impaired vision wears the orientation aid, for example, on his or her arm, it is advantageous for a pair of distance sensor and signaling device to be located on three sides, namely from the person's front, to the rear and to the side. This way, obstacles can be detected in front of, behind and at the side of the person. The synchronization of the distance sensors ensures that there is no unwanted mutual interference and disturbance of these. If, for example, ultrasonic sensors are used, a runtime regulation may be required so that each sensor only receives back the signal it has emitted after reflection on an object.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the signal device comprises a vibration motor, which is particularly suitable for generating the haptic detectable signal.
Furthermore, it can be provided that the fastening means is a belt. This is particularly suitable to fix the orientation aid on the extremities or the torso of the person. The fastening means is advantageously designed such that it can be fastened to the person's body with one hand, in particular by the person himself. For example, Velcro fasteners and / or buckle closures and / or magnetic closures can be provided on the fastening means, which can detachably fix the fastening means enable. So she can use the guidance alone, without relying on the help of other people.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the signaling device is connected or connectable to a commercially available navigation system. Thus, beyond the information obtained by the proximity sensors, the user may be provided with additional information about his environment provided by the navigation system. The user can navigate along a desired route, whereby the combination of navigation system and orientation aid is particularly advantageous. The navigation system Although it contains extensive cartographic data, it can not provide information about obstacles in the immediate vicinity of the user, such as bicycles or people approaching, but this is fully covered by the guidance. For example, while the navigation system transmits directional information acoustically, the orientation aid warns the person in good time of obstacles by means of haptically detectable signals.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the present invention, it is provided that the person uses an orientation system which comprises a plurality of orientation aids which are worn on the body. This allows the environment to be scanned for possible obstacles in all directions. For this purpose, the person may, for example, wear orientation aids around the wrists and ankles, the upper arms and legs and the trunk. A curb could in this case be detected by the ankles placed on the ankle, while a warning is provided in front of a desk edge by the orientation aids on the thighs.
To adapt to the surrounding situation, the user can individually select the profiles for the individual orientation aids. It is also possible to set an automatic mode for the profiles. If the person enters, for example, a room, obstacles are detected by the distance sensors, predominantly at a comparatively short distance. This is detected and the corresponding profile is selected.
The orientation aids can be interconnected and synchronized for data exchange to ensure proper operation. In addition, the connection of the orientation aids can also be used, for example, to be able to determine the size of obstacles as accurately as possible by matching the data of several sensor systems.
