Hierbei detektieren die Sensoren oder mit den Sensoren verbundene Auswertevorrichtungen den Abstand zu möglichen Hindernissen, die sich insbesondere in der Bewegungsrichtung des Kraftfahrzeuges befinden. Dieser Abstand wird dann mittels einer Anzeige dem Kraftfahrer dargestellt. Diese Anzeige ist meist als Flüssigkristall- oder Leuchtdiodenanzeige ausgestaltet und im Bereich der Mittelkonsole des Kraftfahrzeuges angeordnet.
