Description
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a catheter extension device for Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) and a method for operating a catheter extension device.
Background
Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is a process used to remove toxic substances and metabolites that are typically removed by the kidneys and to help regulate fluid and electrolyte balance. The procedure is accomplished by injecting the PD solution into the peritoneal cavity via tubing. Permeation and diffusion takes place between the patient's plasma and the dialysis solution across the peritoneum.
Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) is a form of PD that allows patients to change PD solution 3-4 times a day. CAPD typically uses a two-bag system (one bag of solution, one single empty bag of patient effluent). The dual bag system provides a new solution bag and a new drain bag for each treatment or replacement.
In addition, CAPD may also employ a single bag system, wherein only one bag of solution is provided. Patients typically use a previously treated or replaced used empty solution bag as a drain bag for subsequent treatment or replacement.
Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) is another form of PD that is implemented by an automated peritoneal dialysis machine.
With CAPD (whether a dual bag system or a single bag system) and APD, a catheter extension set is typically required to connect a catheter to be extended into a patient's peritoneal cavity with a patient connector to be connected to a peritoneal dialysis bag system. During dialysis, fresh PD solution flows from the peritoneal dialysis bag system through the catheter extension set and into the patient's peritoneal cavity. After a prescribed period of time, the fluid containing the filtered waste flows out of the peritoneal cavity again through the catheter extension device and is discarded.
In order to perform peritoneal dialysis reliably and conveniently, some parameters and/or operations may need to be monitored or performed. Furthermore, as technology advances, further data management is also needed to facilitate patient and related personnel.
Accordingly, there is a need for further improvements to existing catheter extension devices for PD.
