与电视台通信的电话224也是系统的一部分并可由父母230和儿童232使用,以便与电视台通信。如同将要描述的,父母230可将一定的设置信息通知电视台,如果父母预先定购好奖品,儿童232可以向电视台要求奖品。父母230和儿童232与电视台的交互操作从下面的操作中将变得更为清楚。
图2中示出了教学装置202的方框图。开关300控制通过锁定连接器214和电缆216连接到电视的教学装置302的输出端。到开关的输入端为线路304,在该线路上,教学材料被送到电视,以及线路306,在该线路上,娱乐材料被送到电视。提供教学材料的一种方式是向父母230出售预先录制的教学材料307。如同所示,所述材料可以是英国文学,音乐,艺术,数学和其他科目。父母230选择特定的科目例如英国文学309并将该活动存储介质装入到活动媒体播放器308。开关300和活动媒体播放器由控制器320控制,控制器320可以是一个微计算机。
到开关300的娱乐输入线路306为多路复用器312的输出端,它具有分别来自天线,VCR/电缆盒,卫星接收机,和游戏机的输入端240,242,246和248。由于到多路复用器312的许多输入端是各种电视节目源,多路复用器312的输出可被送到VCR206用于记录,如输出244所示。多路复用器312的输出也被送到控制器320,它可以利用连接到控制器320的定时器监测娱乐输入端通过开关300被切换到电视的时间。
获得教学材料的另一个方式是通过天线,电缆盒,或者卫星接收机下载电视信号中的教学材料。该信号由调谐器340选择,调谐器340调谐到适当的频道,利用VBI解码器342从电视信号中取出嵌入的教学材料。调谐器340由控制器320控制。其他材料,例如,游戏也可以随同教学材料发送并嵌入视频信号中。一旦VBI解码器342取出嵌入的材料,则由控制器320发送到存储器310或者活动媒体播放器308。如果活动媒体播放器也可以用作记录器的话,则后一个目的是可应用的。VBI解码器以及其与视频信号的关系进一步描述如下。一旦教学材料和其他材料例如游戏被存储在存储器310中或者活动媒体播放器308上,然后教学材料在控制器320的控制下被读取并在教学输入端304上送到开关300。
与其具有一个活动媒体播放器并且很可能是一个记录器作为教学装置202的一部份,也可能由教学装置202控制VCR206来提供活动媒体播放器308的功能。教学装置202已经接收来自VCR的输入242并具有一个到VCR206的输出端244,用来进行记录。通过提供具有IR发射器360(也用作RF发射器)的教学装置202,VCR206可以与控制器控制活动媒体播放器308相同的方式由控制器320控制。当VCR206中的教学材料被读出后,教学材料通过多路复用器312和通过门305(由控制器320控制)被发送,使得教学材料在教学输入端304可被送到开关300。
如图2所示,教学装置202还包括一个键盘326和一个显示器328,显示器328是用于控制和监视的目的。遥控器220包括数字键350,向上键352和向下键354。而且输入键356被提供在遥控器上。
如下面进一步描述的,当娱乐输入端被切换到教学装置的输出端时,教学装置通过监测娱乐输入端来控制电视的教学和娱乐使用。当娱乐输入被切换到教学装置的输出端时,娱乐输入端的监测可以两种形式进行。一种形式的监测是娱乐输入端被切换到输出端的时间量。另一种形式的监测是在娱乐输入端上所玩的游戏的次数。娱乐输入端被切换到输出端的时间可以由一个定时器322测量。在娱乐输入端上玩的游戏的次数可以由一个计数器324来测量。在使用者例如儿童232使用电视达到预定的时间或者玩游戏达到预定的次数后,开关300在控制器320的控制下被切换到教学输入端。教学材料被从存储器310,活动媒体播放器308,或者VCR206读出并提供到教学输入端并通过开关300提供到电视204。控制器320保持使用者回答显示在电视上的教学材料的得分。当使用者例如儿童232在电视上显示的教学材料上获得预定的分数时,控制器320将开关300切换到娱乐输入端306。
在操作教学装置的一种方式中,游戏程序连同教学材料被下载并被嵌入在通过电缆,卫星或空中发射的视频信号中。如上所述,数学材料由VBI解码器342取出,被存储在例如存储器310中。
图3示出了可以存贮在存储器310中的信息,包括教学材料370,帮助材料372和教学材料374。帮助材料实际上是教学材料370的子集。教学材料包含与选择科目相关的问题,帮助材料包含该科目的辅导。如果儿童不知道问题的答案,则儿童可以查看帮助材料,以便儿童可以进一步理解该科目。娱乐材料可以包含游戏。
从发射的视频信号中获得的教学材料和娱乐材料通常是通过“付费观看”(pay per View)或“付费播放”(pay for play)系统付费的,其中,使用者,在这里是父母230向电视台打电话并对要发送的教学材料和娱乐材料付费。在教学装置的一个实施例中,通过付费播放系统获得的并存储在存储器例如存储器310中的娱乐材料在游戏机被玩了预定次数之后被擦除。这有效地限制了随同电视信号下载的教学材料和娱乐材料可被使用的次数,保证了电视台的业务的重复性及连续的收益性。
下面描述教学材料和娱乐材料在电视台被嵌入视频信号及在接收器被解码的方式。
在阴极射线管(CRT)型视频装置,例如电视上的视频图像是通过沿着屏幕的预定方式的行扫描射束产生的。每当所有的行都被扫描时,即产生了一帧。在一种实施方式中,例如美国采用的方式中,一帧每秒扫描30次,每个电视帧包括525行,分成两个分开的场,称为262.5行的场1(“奇数场”)和场2(“偶数场”)。因此,这些奇数场和偶数场被以60Hz交替地发射。在称为隔行扫描的过程中,偶数场和奇数场的行是交叉的,以便每1/30秒产生全部的525行。世界上另一种标准是使用625行的信息,以每秒钟50场交叉312和313行。在美国使用的525行标准中,在电视屏幕上大约显示480行。
图4是显示传统的电视接收机的屏幕上的隔行扫描方式100的示意图。显示器扫描射束从左上角开始扫描整个屏幕(图4中的场1,行22)。当第一行扫描结束后,在称为水平消隐期间的期间,射束返回到左侧,并沿着平行于第一行但在其下面的另一行重复扫描(图4中场1,行23)。扫描沿着行持续进行直到射束达到屏幕的底部的中央(场1,行263)完成场1(包括行102)。
从屏幕底部中央,射束返回到顶部,沿着与场1的行交叉的场2的行104从屏幕的中央开始扫描。这不是一个瞬时的从底部到顶部的跳跃,而实际上需要扫描21个水平行的时间长度。这些行106为场2的行1到21。场2行21的第二半(图4中所示的行284)被显示。然后,场2的行285-525被扫描以完成场2。当射束到达屏幕的底部右角时,图象帧被形成。然后,射束退回到顶部并且垂直回扫间隔行108被编号为场1的1到21。在北美所广泛采用的NTSC协议中,每场包括262.5个水平行并且2个场构成一个单一的525行图象帧并在显示器上一次产生一幅图象。
当射束从两场间屏幕底部返回到顶部时,因为它不在屏幕上产生任何图像元素所以它不携带任何视频或图像信号。该时间间隔通常称为水平消隐期间(VBI)。它典型地是射束扫描整个屏幕所需时间的21倍。换言之,VBI的持续时间等于射束扫描21行的时间并被分为21行。在隔行扫描中,VBI是由与其相关的场识别的。使用NTSC标准每VBI21行的设备和方法是该领域所熟知的,在此不再详述。
由于在垂直消隐期间中没有图象显示,因此无需由广播信号携带任何图像信息。因此,VBI可被用来携带附加的信息,从网络或电视台发送给观众。例如,与电视台节目相关的闭合字幕数据在图6所示的标准的NTSC的场1的VBI行21中被编码成复合的数据信号发射。
每场的VBI的行1-9用于垂直同步和后均衡脉冲。因此,行10-21可用于附加信息。
图5是数据传输系统的功能框图。这里使用的术语“广播”和“发射”对于通过电缆或光纤,去或来自卫星,通过空中等等的信号传输是互换使用的。网络前端10001向卫星10002发射包含在其中一部分,典型地为垂直回扫间隔(图4所述),插入的信息复合电视信号,卫星10002再将其广播到本地的联播台10003。联播台10003向接收的电视信号中的垂直消隐期间中进一步插入数据,并将其发送到本地电缆前端10004。电缆前端10004从多个源(包括卫星)接收电视信号并可进一步向任何电视信号的垂直消隐期间插入数据。来自多个源的信号被结合成复合的电视信号,放大,通过电缆提供到多个接收机10005。此外,接收机10005可直接从联播台10003通过空中接收信号(可包括使用卫星10002,或通过电缆)。
更具体地说,网络前端具有一台录像机(VTR)10006,用于向插入器10007提供节目信号。也处于前端的控制器10008控制磁带从取放设备(一种具有多个录像带的设备,通过机械臂将录像带从存放位置取出放入到录像机中或者进行相反的过程)的装入程序。此外,控制器10008控制现场广播,例如新闻广播时舞台照明。控制器10008典型的是以微处理器为基础的系统。业务计算机10009控制播放录象带具体的段的确切的定时并在其中插入商业广告以及在不同的节目之间切换。某些网络前端既有业务计算机也有控制器10008。控制器10008向插入器10007提供数据和指令。如果有的话,业务计算机10009向控制器提供数据和指令。否则业务计算机10009将这些信号直接提供到插入器10007。插入器10007向如下所述那样,将数据插入到复合电视信号的垂直消隐期间,并将电视信号提供到发射机10010,发射机反过来将信号放到微波载波上送到蝶形天线10011,以便发送到卫星10002。
卫星10002转发该接收的信号,该信号由联播台10003处的卫星蝶形天线接收。蝶形天线将信号提供到本地联播台10003的台插入器10013。联播台也可以向下述那样将信号插入到复合电视信号中。然后电视信号被送到发射机10014然后送到发射天线10015。
本地电缆(有线电视)运营者10004具有多个卫星10016蝶形天线和天线10017,用于接收来自多个网络10001和联播台10003的信号。从每个蝶形天线10016和天线10007接收的信号被送到多通道插入器10018的输入端,插入器10008可以将输入数据插入到接收信号的垂直回扫间隔。插入器10018的多通道输出在放大器10019中放大并通过电缆10020提供到接收机10005。另外,接收机10005可以通过天线或卫星接收机接收广播信息。
在VBI中插入的数据可通过扫描场1和场2的VBI行的VBI解码器在每个接收机10005被复原(包括教学装置)。另外,也可以在每个图象帧中的首先的几个可视的行,例如行22-24,中对VBI数据解码。行1-9典型地是用于垂直同步和均衡,因此,不用于发射数据。字幕和文本模式的数据通常是在标准的NTSC视频信号的场1,VBI行21上发射,对于场1的每个VBI行21,采用的速率为2字节,如图6所示的字幕数据112。文本模式场由文本充满整个屏幕。缺省模式是开放式结束模式,其中该页被首先充满然后滚动。这种数据的接收不对数据进行控制。扩展数据服务(EDS)数据也可如图6所示通过EDS数据,以每个场2,VBI行212字节的速率在场2,VBI行21上发射。

在用于行21的数据服务的建议作法中建议的扩展数据服务(EDS)中,电子工业联盟,EIA-608(1992年10月12日和1993年6月17日起草)(以下称为“EA-608”标准”,其主题被引用作为参考,附加数据被提供在垂直消隐期间的场2,行21中。该要求包括两个闭合字幕场,两个文本模式场和扩展数据服务。扩展数据包括,在其它信息中,节目名称,节目长度,演出长度,频道号,网络联播台,台呼叫字母,UTC(世界坐标时间)时间,时区,和夏时制的使用。在网络的上游,网络插入节目名称,节目长度,演出长度,网络联播台及UTC时间。在联播台的下游,联播台插入频道号,时区,夏时制使用及节目名称。网络插入对于不同的联播台不产生分歧的数据。
插入器可向电视信号插入除闭合字幕数据和EDS数据之外的数据。电视台插入的数据可包括例如教学材料和包含游戏的娱乐材料,它既可以插入VBI行10和20之间的一个或两个场之中。例如,该数据可以插入到场2的行20,如图6的数据114所示。该数据可以以闭合字幕速率(1X格式)或两倍闭合字幕速率(2X格式)插入到VBI,下面将进一步描述。
所述数据可通过本地终端10021人工输入,本地终端可以用来预构建,调出,或编辑消息,终端10021典型地包括一个计算机。此外,调制解调器(MODEM)10022可用来向插入器10007提供数据。插入器10007的输出是具有插入数据的复合电视信号。
NTSC格式的视频信号的时序在该领域中是众所周知的。如上所述,垂直回扫间隔是从屏幕的底部回扫到屏幕的顶部之间的时间。尽管没有视频信号被显示,在VBI过程中仍然要提供水平同步信号。标准数据传输速率是以EIA-608标准定义的。
如图7所示,水平同步脉冲120之后跟随的是彩色脉冲信号122。对于闭合字幕和EDS数据,时钟插入周期124跟随在彩色脉冲之后,后面是帧编码126。时钟插入是“10101010101”。帧编码是“01000011”。两个数据字节128和138在每个VBI行中发送。每个字节是包括校验位的8位。该格式被称为标准速率格式(或1X格式)。在VBI行的每个字节中是首先排列最低有效字节。最后位用作查错的校验位。发射的数据的每个字节在接收时进行奇偶校验。1X格式是用于发射图6中的闭合字幕数据112所示的VBI行21场1中的闭合字幕的格式。它也是用于发射图6中的EDS数据116所示的VBI行21场2中的EDS数据的格式。
图8中所示的加速数据格式(2X格式)是1X格式的两倍,从而,提供每VBI行4字节。时钟插入144为位序列“ 10101010”。帧编码146为“10011101101”。每VBI行发射四个数据字节148,150,152和154。2X格式可被用来发射教学材料和娱乐材料,如图6中所示的数据114所示。

如果图10a中的步骤604中确定教学装置未被使能,则包括TV输出端和游戏机的娱乐装置将正常地操作,如步骤606所示。
如果教学装置被使能。则下一步是使用者在步骤607选择教学装置。图9b是教学装置可被输入1)播放选择的娱乐媒体科目的模式,2)接收和存储付费播放教学课目,3)播放选择的存储的付费播放教学科目,或4)检索数据。首先描述播放教学材料的模式1和3。如果使用活动媒体,使用者从库307中选择科目之一并将其插入到活动媒体播放器308。如果付费教学科目已经被存储在存储器310中,则如图9c所示的屏幕可通知该科目的使用者该科目已被存储,使用者可选择所需科目。在步骤608,使用者选择具体的科目播放。这可以通过在图9c中选择具体科目如英国文学来实现。

17.权利要求16的方法,其中与电视台通信通知显示的奖励编码标识符的步骤包括在电视上显示电视台的电话号码的步骤。
18.权利要求16的方法,进一步包括步骤:
当得分等于或超过第二门限值时,在电视上向第一使用者显示奖励编码标识符的步骤包括在电视上向第一使用者显示奖品以允许第一使用者选择奖品的步骤。
19.权利要求15的方法,进一步包括第二使用者从教学材料中选择教学课目用于在电视上显示的步骤。
20.权利要求15的方法,进一步包括步骤:
第二使用者选择第一门限值;以及
第二使用者选择对于玩娱乐材料中的游戏的次数的计数的预定值。
21.权利要求15的方法,进一步包括步骤:
对玩娱乐材料中的游戏的次数计数;以及
当玩游戏的次数的计数等于第二预定值时,擦除存储器中的游戏。
