Method for increasing the efficiency of a reciprocating internal combustion engine and reciprocating internal combustion engine.
The invention relates to a method for increasing the efficiency of a reciprocating internal combustion engine according to the preamble of patent claim 1 and a reciprocating internal combustion engine according to the preamble of patent claim. 6
Conventional two- or four-stroke internal combustion engines are driven by the gas pressure generated by the combustion of hydrocarbon in liquid or gaseous form. A considerable part of the released energy is not converted into mechanical energy, but released as waste heat to the environment of the engine. On the one hand on the material surrounding the combustion chambers, on the other hand on the hot combustion gases.
In the patent document with the international publication number WO 2007/042 022 A2 an internal combustion engine is described in which after a combustion cycle, a coolant is brought into the combustion chamber to cool the cylinder internally and to convert a portion of the waste heat into mechanical energy. The patent provides water as a possible coolant, among other things. The internal combustion engine disclosed herein has not found any practical application to the knowledge of the inventor. On the one hand, the low temperature of the exhaust gases, which tends to be low, is not an advantage for the exhaust gas treatment that is customary today and for the most part also prescribed. Also unfavorable for the emission control is the increased water content of the exhaust gases.
On the other hand, the injected amount of the coolant should be variable and controllable, so that the temperature of the cylinder walls can be kept constant even in a short time and also the mechanical performance of the engine can be better controlled.
The object of the invention is to use a portion of the waste heat of a reciprocating internal combustion engine for further recovery of usable mechanical energy and to reduce the heat losses, with a conventional treatment of the combustion gases is possible.
This object is achieved by a method with the features of claim 1 and by a reciprocating internal combustion engine with the features of claim. 6
Advantageous developments of the method are indicated in the dependent claims 2 to 5, those of the reciprocating internal combustion engine in the dependent claims 7 to 9.
According to the invention, in at least one cylinder of the internal combustion engine between two or more working cycles, in which fuel is burned, introduced in one or more consecutive working cycles instead of fuel, an expansion agent via a separate supply line into the combustion chamber. As a work cycle here are two bars in the two-stroke engine and four strokes in the four-stroke engine to understand.
A duty cycle includes both the two-stroke and the four-stroke engine exactly one stroke, the piston is pressed by gas pressure in the combustion chamber and in which the cylinder generates mechanical energy, while the expansion agent in these additional cycles always at the beginning or only slightly before Beginning of the power stroke introduced into the combustion chamber, namely when the piston is in the uppermost position or in the preceding upward movement. In the combustion chamber of the cylinder, the expansion medium is pressurized by heating, wherein the heat of the walls of the combustion chamber and the heat of the compressed air at this moment is used for heating the expansion means.
In the subsequent expansion of the expansion means, in which the piston of the cylinder is pressed down, one gains mechanical energy. It is thus achieved a significant increase in performance with the same fuel consumption in that the cylinder is not supplied with the described method with every stroke with fuel and yet generates kinetic energy at each power stroke.
The expulsion from the cycles with expansion means according to the invention is not discharged via the same exhaust gas channels as the exhaust gases of the combustion processes, but via at least one additional exhaust duct. This allows a separate exhaust treatment: On the one hand, the temperatures of the combustion gases for the exhaust gas purification can be kept high. On the other hand, the recovery of the expansion agent via a cooler integrated in the additional exhaust duct is easily possible and a complex cleaning of the expansion agent is not necessary for reuse. So there are two processes running, i. the combustion of fuel and the expansion of the expansion medium, offset in time via two different channels, with both processes as an expansion space sharing the combustion chambers of the reciprocating internal combustion engine.
Thus, a substantial increase in power with the same fuel consumption is achieved in that the cylinder with the inventive method is not supplied with fuel at each power stroke and yet generates kinetic energy at each power stroke. With the same power output, this method allows considerable fuel savings compared to conventional internal combustion engines. This is also to be welcomed from an environmental point of view.
During the working cycles in which the cylinder is supplied with the expansion means, the walls of the combustion chamber of the cylinder in question are cooled and protected against overheating. This reduces the need to cool the cylinder from the outside or through a cooling circuit, such as is found in conventional water-cooled engines. These working cycles are therefore referred to below as cooling cycles, while the working cycles with a power stroke in which fuel is burned are referred to as combustion cycles.
Advantageously, the expansion agent is circulated, in which it is cooled after leaving the cylinder. By such an embodiment of the invention, it is not necessary to continuously supply expansion agent. This can, similar to, for example, a coolant in a conventional engine, stored in a reservoir and fed into the mentioned cycle.
As expansion agent, preferably water or another, inert liquid or an inert, liquefied gas is used.
Hereinafter, the inventive principle is first shown on a single-cylinder four-stroke engine in which a cooling cycle follows each combustion cycle.
The basis is a conventional four-stroke single-cylinder internal combustion engine with direct injection or injection of the fuel in a pre-vortex or swirl chamber. The cylinder is provided with a further nozzle via which the expansion agent can be introduced directly into the combustion chamber. The fuel injection is now controlled so that the fuel is passed instead of every stroke only at every second power stroke in the combustion chamber or in the vortex or vortex chamber. If the injection is controlled electronically, the injection frequency is halved. If the injection is controlled mechanically via a transmission mechanism, the injection frequency is halved by an additional ratio. In each of the intermediate work cycles, the expansion agent is introduced into the combustion chamber.
In this case, the expansion medium, such as the fuel in direct injection engines, by means of a pump-nozzle system or via a common rail system when using multiple nozzles, can be injected. Preferably, the injected amount is controlled by a temperature sensor on the cylinder and increased with increasing temperature. An additional outlet with its own exhaust duct is attached to the cylinder. The exhaust valve control is now changed so that the output of the combustion cycle is always directed into the conventional exhaust duct, but the output of the cooling cycle is always directed into the additional exhaust duct. This can be achieved by connecting the additional exhaust duct to the combustion chamber via an additional valve.
Or the output is passed immediately after leaving the combustion chamber via an additional control in the exhaust ducts. In this case, no additional cylinder outlet, but only an additional exhaust duct is needed. In this case, this element is controlled so that it switches every four clocks between the two exhaust ducts. Preferably, this control is designed as a simple flap, which is articulated via an additional camshaft. As a control but also a 3/2-way valve can be used, which is articulated, for example via a camshaft. If the discharge separation occurs via an additional discharge valve, then all discharge valves are only opened at half frequency or only every eight cycles. If the exhaust valves are controlled electronically, the opening frequency is halved.
If the exhaust valves are controlled mechanically via a camshaft, their rotational speed is halved by an additional ratio. The cams on the camshaft are arranged so that the valves for the ejection of the combustion cycle and the ejection of the cooling cycle are alternately opened.
The additional exhaust duct is designed so that the ejected gases are strongly cooled and the expansion agent condenses. For this purpose, preferably a metal tube with high thermal conductivity is used, through which the ejected gases flow. The condensed expansion agent is returned by means of a pump via a channel to the injection nozzles.
In multi-cylinder engines, the described method can be applied to one, several or all cylinders.
In principle, the combustion and cooling cycles can be traversed in any sequence in an engine designed according to the invention. Preferably, the sequence is controlled via thermostats so that the internal combustion engine has a constant temperature. The start-up phase of the engine then advantageously only consists of combustion cycles that follow one another directly, until the engine has reached its ideal operating temperature.
Action:
Shown here on a single-cylinder four-stroke engine in which a refrigeration cycle follows each combustion cycle.
The engine is started normally, passing through a combustion stroke only every other cycle. Neither fuel nor expanding agent is injected in the intermediate work cycles. When the cylinder has reached its optimum operating temperature, the expansion agent is injected into the combustion chamber in these working cycles between the combustion cycles. The injected amount is determined according to the temperature of the walls of the combustion chambers and is the greater, the higher the temperature. The injection of the expansion agent via a separate nozzle and if and when the piston is at the beginning of the power stroke or shortly before the uppermost position in the cylinder. From the combustion chamber surface, the expansion medium evaporates and the resulting gas pressure pushes the piston down (power stroke).
The piston is in the lowest position, the exhaust valve opens and the cylinder contents is ejected in the subsequent upward movement of the piston via the control element on the cylinder outlet in the additional exhaust duct (discharge stroke). In the area of the uppermost position of the piston, the inlet valve opens while the outlet valve closes. A delayed closing of the exhaust valve is useful in supercharged engines to blow out the remainder of the inert expansion agent. During the downward movement, air flows into the cylinder (intake stroke).
In the lowest position of the piston closes the inlet valve and during the subsequent upward movement, the air is compressed (compression stroke). Via a camshaft, the control element is rearranged behind the outlet valve, so that the valve is now connected to the conventional exhaust duct. In the area of the uppermost position of the piston, fuel is now injected and ignited. The engine then again goes through in the manner described work cycle, Ausstosstakt, intake stroke and compression stroke, the exhaust gases are now passed into the conventional exhaust duct. During the compression stroke, the control is reset via the camshaft. The expansion agent condenses meanwhile in the additional exhaust passage.
Instead of the control element on the cylinder outlet, as described above, at least one additional outlet valve can also be used.
The condensate of the expansion agent is conveyed back by means of a pump in a reservoir and from there to the injection nozzle.
The inventive principle is shown below on a single-cylinder two-stroke engine, in which a cooling cycle follows each combustion cycle.
The basis is a conventional two-stroke single-cylinder internal combustion engine with direct injection or injection of the fuel in a pre-vortex or swirl chamber. The inventive method is the same as in the single-cylinder four-stroke engine described above, except that in principle no valve control must be considered.
The cylinder is provided with a further nozzle, via which the expansion agent can be introduced directly into the combustion chamber. The fuel injection is controlled so that the fuel is conducted into the combustion chamber or into the pre-vortex or vortex chamber only at every second power stroke, instead of at every power stroke. If the injection is controlled electronically, the injection frequency is halved. If the injection is controlled mechanically via a transmission mechanism, the injection frequency is halved by an additional ratio. In each of the intermediate work cycles, the expansion agent is introduced into the combustion chamber.
In this case, the expansion medium such as the fuel can be injected in direct injection engines by means of a pump-nozzle system or via a common rail system when using multiple nozzles. According to the invention, the injected quantity is controlled via a temperature sensor on the cylinder and increased with increasing temperature. An additional exhaust duct is connected to the outlet of the cylinder. Via a control, the ejection of the cylinder is passed immediately after leaving the combustion chamber in the exhaust gas channels. In this case, this control is coupled to the control of the injectors and arranged to switch every two clocks between the two exhaust ducts.
In this way, the emission of the combustion cycle can always be directed into the conventional exhaust passage and the discharge of the cooling cycle always in the additional exhaust passage. Preferably, this control is designed as a simple flap also in the two-stroke internal combustion engine, which is controlled by a camshaft. The camshaft is advantageously connected in this case via a transmission mechanism with the crankshaft. As a control, a 3/2 - way valve can be used, which is articulated, for example via a camshaft.
The additional exhaust duct is, as when using a four-stroke engine as a basis, designed so that the ejected gases are strongly cooled and condenses the expansion agent. By means of a pump, the expansion agent is returned to the injectors.
In multi-cylinder engines, the described method can be applied to one, several or all cylinders.
Even when using a two-stroke internal combustion engine as a basis, it is in principle possible with the inventive method to put the combustion and cooling cycles in any order. The sequence of working cycles is also controlled in the two-stroke engine, preferably via thermostats. The start-up phase of the engine then advantageously only consists of combustion cycles that follow one another directly, until the engine has reached its ideal operating temperature.
Action:
Here again shown on a single-cylinder two-stroke engine in which a cooling cycle follows each combustion cycle.
The engine is started normally, passing through only one combustion cycle every other cycle. Neither fuel nor expanding agent is injected in the intermediate work cycles. As soon as the cylinder has reached its optimum operating temperature, the expansion agent is injected into the combustion chamber in these working cycles between the combustion cycles. The injected amount is determined according to the temperature of the walls of the combustion chambers and is the greater, the higher the temperature. The injection of the expansion agent via a separate nozzle and if and when the piston is at the beginning of the power stroke or shortly before the uppermost position in the cylinder.
From the combustion chamber surface expands the expansion agent and the resulting gas pressure pushes the piston down (power stroke), the control element at the outlet of the cylinder connects the cylinder with the additional exhaust channel. If the piston is in the region of the lowest position, air flows into the cylinder via the inlet channel and blows the gas mixture in the cylinder into the additional exhaust gas channel. During the subsequent upward movement, the air is compressed (compression stroke). Via a camshaft, the control element is rearranged behind the outlet valve, so that the valve is now connected to the conventional exhaust duct. In the area of the uppermost position of the piston, fuel is now injected and ignited.
The engine then goes through again in the manner described power stroke and compression stroke, the exhaust gases are now passed into the conventional exhaust duct. During the compression stroke, the control on the cylinder outlet is reset via the camshaft.
The expansion agent condenses in the additional exhaust duct and is conveyed back by means of a pump in a reservoir and from there to the injection nozzle.
The advantages achieved by the invention are:
<Tb> first <sep> That the fuel consumption is reduced with the same performance.
<Tb> second <sep> That in principle no new engines have to be developed, but can be built on the worldwide existing engine technology and exhaust gas purification technology.
<Tb> third <sep> That basically all already built or used engines can be converted with fuel direct injection.
<Tb> 4th <sep> That a large part of the waste heat can be converted into usable mechanical energy.
<Tb> 5th <sep> That in principle no time-consuming development is necessary, but with the existing technical knowledge an immediate implementation can take place.
Hereinafter, the principle according to the invention will be explained a third time by means of a single-cylinder reciprocating internal combustion engine with reference to the only accompanying figure.
Fig. 1 shows schematically the structure of an inventive single-cylinder reciprocating internal combustion engine, in which the exhaust control is done via a controllable flap.
In this figure, a built according to the invention single-cylinder reciprocating internal combustion engine is shown schematically. The cylinder inlet numbered 1 and the cylinder outlet numbered 2 represent schematically inlet and exhaust valves. For the inventive principle, it is irrelevant whether the engine has valves or not. Also irrelevant to the inventive principle is whether the cylinder inlet numbered 1 and the cylinder outlet numbered 2 are mounted in the upper region of the combustion chamber or laterally on the cylinder. With 3, the cylinder wall is designated, with 4 of the piston, 20 of the combustion chamber. The crankshaft is marked with 5, the connecting rod with 6.
7 denotes a fuel line, via which the regular fuel is injected by means of an injection pump 8 into the cylinder. The gases produced during combustion leave the cylinder via the exhaust pipe 9.
10 is a conduit for the expansion means, via which the expansion agent is injected by means of an injection pump 8 into the cylinder. The mixture of air and expansion agent leaves the cylinder via the exhaust pipe 11. 12 denotes a cooler in which the expansion agent condenses. It is integrated in the exhaust duct 11. Via a pump 13, the expansion agent enters the reservoir 14, from where it can be re-fed into the line 10.
With a control unit 15 is designated. It is connected to a temperature sensor 16 on the cylinder. Through a transmission mechanism 17, the controller controls the supply of fuel and expansion agent in the cylinder. The controller also controls the injected amount of expanding agent. The control of the supply 19 of expander and fuel is shown schematically here by the symbol for electrical circuits. The control device also controls the control element 18 on the cylinder outlet 2 via the same transmission mechanism. The control element used here is a convertible flap. The control of the supply of fuel and expansion means 19 is arranged so that either fuel or expansion agent can get into the cylinder, but not both at the same time.
The transmission mechanism is further arranged so that the control 18 at the cylinder outlet 2 always switches between the exhaust pipes 9 and 11 when the control between the fuel and expansion medium supply 19 switches. It can thereby be achieved that the exhaust gases of the combustion cycles are always directed into the designated exhaust duct 9 and the exhaust gases of the cooling cycles are directed into the exhaust duct 11 provided for this purpose, even if the combustion and cooling cycles are run through in any order.
For the inventive principle, however, it is sufficient to connect the control of the fuel and expansion agent supply 19 and the control element 18 at the cylinder outlet 2 via a transmission mechanism with the crankshaft 5. Instead of the flap as a control element 18, as already described, two mutually opening outlet valves or a 3/2-way valve can also be used. The engine is started normally and initially generates only kinetic energy through the combustion of fuel passing through line 7 into the cylinder.
The exhaust gases are led away via the exhaust duct 9. If the cylinder wall 3 exceeds a predetermined temperature, the control unit 15 switches over the transmission mechanism 17 of fuel to expanders and sets the control element 18 on the cylinder outlet 2 so that the exhaust gases are conducted into the exhaust gas channel 11. In the next cycle, the engine generates kinetic energy by the expansion of the expansion agent in the combustion chamber 20. If the cylinder wall 3 falls below the specified temperature threshold, the control unit restarts to supply fuel and returns the control element 18 at the cylinder outlet 2.
As already described, it is sufficient for the inventive principle to undergo combustion and cooling cycles in a rigid sequence. The temperature sensor 16 and the control unit 15 then serve only to control the injected amount of expansion agent.
