L'uso dei moschettoni quali elementi di collegamento tra la corda d'arrampicata e i diversi attrezzi, o più in generale come elementi di sicurezza è conosciuto e diffuso già da tempo. I moschettoni attualmente disponibili sul mercato sono costituiti da un anello apribile in acciaio o lega leggera. Una porzione di detto anello, chiamato corpo del moschettone, è sagomato sostanzialmente a C. Una delle sue estremità aperte è atta a ricevere girevolmente l'estremità di una leva che costituisce l'elemento di chiusura dell'anello, mentre l'altra estremità libera del corpo è sagomata a gancio ed è atta a ricevere l'estremità libera di detta leva. L'apertura del moschettone si effettua premendo sulla leva, la quale ruota verso l'interno creando una luce attraverso cui può passare la corda, È pure prevista una molla tra la leva e il corpo del moschettone; essa fa sì che, rilasciando la leva, questa ritorni nella posizione iniziale impegnandosi con il gancio situato all'estremità del corpo del moschettone, e determinando in tal modo la chiusura del moschettone stesso.The use of carabiners as connecting elements between the climbing rope and the various tools, or more generally as safety elements, has been known and widespread for some time.
