Abstract
Cyclopentenes having the general formula (I) (where R' is H, OH, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; R2 is H, lower alkyl or lower alkylidene and the dotted line denotes an opt. bond) are useful as perfume co and ingredients of perfume co compsns. They are prepd. by reacting a cpd. having the formula (II), in the presence of an acid catalyst, with an enol ether (III') or a ketal (III"): (in which R5 is H, lower alkyl or lower alkenyl) and opt. catalytically hydrogenating a 3-isopropenyl cpd. (I) obtd. to the 3-isopropyl cpd. of formula (I) and/or oxidising an aldehyde obtd. of formula (Ia) to the acid (Ib): and opt. converting these to the ester (Ic): (where R3 is lower alkyl).
